Five Unorthodox Yet Tested Ways to Reduce Stress

Life is stressful. It’s a fact we all deal with every day. And whether you work for a company that manufactures pediatric blood collection tubes, or sells stuffed teddy bears, stress is almost inevitable in this day and age. However, there are ways you can combat the onset of frustration that comes with being overstressed.

Oh, you mean you’ve already tried meditation, yoga, diet/exercise, and “sharing your feelings?” Not to worry; here are five unorthodox methods to manage your stress successfully:

Play With Your Dog

Play With Your Dog

When was the last time you took Fido out to the park for a walk, or played fetch in the yard? You’re understandably busy, but spending time with your pet is a great way to relieve stress and recenter yourself. Plus, it’s a great way to stay active. No yoga mat required.

Dust Off the CD Player

Listening to music is a fantastic way to get a jump on relieving stress. Take some time out to listen to an entire album from beginning to end. Just listening to one or two songs on a briskly commute to work isn’t going to relax your brain the same way listening to a number of songs in succession will. And if you’re insistent on using modern technology, create a playlist for yourself with your favorite music on it –– just make sure it’s long enough to get lost in.

Surround Yourself with Positive Smells

Good vibes aren’t restricted to upbeat music and bright colors. Your sense of smell is powerful and shouldn’t be neglected in improving your quality of life. Invest in some scented candles for your room, or else try out different air fresheners until you’re smelling your way to a better life.

Prioritize

Sometimes, the simplest way to reduce stress is to reduce the number of things you have to accomplish. Identify some tasks or responsibilities that aren’t essential and cut them loose. It may be tough figuring out what’s least important, but once you do, reduce your involvement or stop doing those things altogether. If they’re not important, you won’t miss them.

Stress can get anyone down, and when people are stressed they tend to focus on the negatives. But it’s important to remember that you’re a smart, capable individual. Think back to times when you succeeded, or completed a difficult task. It’ll keep you inspired when it looks like things are turning bleak.
