Eczema Symptoms

Eczema: Symptoms

Top Symptoms

1. Skin discharges

Just like dry skin patches were a symptom of eczema, wet skin patches also are symptoms. For instance, in seborrheic dermatitis, red scaly patches form with yellow crusts. These patches have a discharge that makes them wet. Sometimes, these discharges can also be greasy.

2. Changes in skin color and texture

There is a particular kind of eczema that results in the change color and texture of the skin. Known as Lichen Simplex Chronicus, the rash thickens and makes the skin very leathery. The smoothness and softness of the skin is lost and over time it develops into a darker shade. Even statis dermatitis which is caused in the lower extremities of the body could lead to darkening of skin. The darkened skin also exists in patches. Yellow crusty patches occur in seborrheic dermatitis.

3. Redness and tenderness in lower legs

Statisย dermatitis is the condition that begins with the lower legs. It starts as the legs getting swollen and puffy. Mild itching develops. The swelling is because of the lack of proper circulation. Poorly functioning veins, varicose veins and edema from either cardiac problems or kidney problems can cause the poor circulation of blood. Once this happens, there are even chances of a secondary bacterial infection that makes the legs sore and tender. Such bacterial infections would be best treated as soon as possible by the doctor else they could lead to far worse conditions.

4. Dry skin and cracked skin

Asteototic eczema presents as dry skin on the legs which cracks up later on. An intense itching and stinging pain accompanies. Even nummular eczema begins as patches on the skin that dry up and get cracked. The patches also often get crusted and appear like little outgrowths on the skin. Using a moisturizer will help to soothe the affected skin in such conditions. But the use must be done carefully, or else the eczema will spread as you spread the cream along the skin. Dandruff on the head and other skin particles on the eyes, ears and nose can all be the result of eczema.

5. Skin affected with bumps and reddening

Dermatitis which is caused by irritants and allergies usually exhibits as red bumps on the skin. These fine bumps cause severe itches and they occur in the places that came in contact with the allergen or irritant. Plants such as the poison ivy, poison surmac or the poison oak are responsible for these symptoms. If one refrains from itching, the episode will pass and the bumps and reddening will abate.

6. Hair loss

Hair loss is a real symptom of eczema though it does not manifest in the initial stages of the disease. The skin begins to change texture and color and as the severity of eczema increases, hair follicles that are embedded in the skin also begin to get affected. The follicles anchor the hair shaft to the skin surface, whether on the scalp or other parts of the body. Once the follicles wither away, the hair shafts simply slough off. Thus, bald patches get created in the regions where eczema has taken root. However, in most cases, hair growth returns once eczema has been treated and cured.

7. Itchy patches

The most distinguishable symptom of eczema is the severe itch that it causes. Often, red, dry and crusted patches appear on the skin surface and one feels a very strong urge to scratch them to gain relief. These are the manifestation symptoms of atopic eczema or atopic dermatitis. Eczema of the hands, that occurs mainly in winters, has a similar manifestation. The patches in the latter case need not be red and the eczema can be seen on the covered regions of the hand, like the patch of skin under a ring.
