STDs: Symptoms

Top Symptoms

1. Odors, rashes and fevers

Bacterial vaginosis and trichomoniasis lead to odors in the genital area. Rashes may also develop in both males and females. In the case of AIDS, which is the most dreaded STD, a host of symptoms appear. Fever is the most common among them. This happens because AIDS weakens the immune system of the body. Thus, the patient becomes susceptible to a host of secondary infections and diseases.

2. Visible infestation

Sometimes, there is a visible infestation of nits and pubic lice. This could also be indicative of other STDs because pubic lice spreads only via sexual contact. In fact, pubic lice is the most common STD in the world today. The genital area will reveal nits on the pubic hair. These are eggs of the lice and it is quite hard to get rid of the infestation.

3. Painful urination

Dysuria is a condition that can result from an STD. There is pain and a burning sensation that accompanies urination. Men may experience a burning feeling in the penis and urethra and this could last an entire day at times. This is also accompanied by discharge and blood in the urine. Women may experience a burning sensation in the vagina. To help your doctor with the diagnosis, you should make a note of when the burning sensation began. Painful urination could be indicative of chlamydia, gonorrhea, trichomoniasis or herpes.

4. Lumps, bumps, ulcers, sores and warts

In males, an STD could show itself as sores and lesions that can appear on the penis, the scrotum or the urethra. In women, they can appear on the vulva or the vagina. The sores and ulcers may denote syphilis or herpes. The Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) can also cause soft outgrowths in the genital areas and the anal region.

5. Painful intercourse

Sexually transmitted diseases can cause a condition known as dyspareunia. This happens when either the male or female or both experience pelvic pain after or during intercourse. This can happen any time during sex: at erection, penetration or during ejaculation. This pain may get so severe at times that the person may completely lose interest in any kind of sexual activity. If this occurs because you have contracted an STD, then it will have other accompanying symptoms too. The most common among them is irritation and discharges from the vagina or urethra.

6. Itching

Itching is a predominant symptom in women. The vaginal and vulva regions develop a tingling or uneasy irritation and induce one to itch. The itching sensation may become very severe too. If this itching is accompanied by discharge and odors, it could be vaginitis that has been transmitted sexually. This is common in girls before puberty and it need not indicate the presence of an STD. But, in case it turns out to be a disease of the sexual variety, abuse is a sure conclusion. In such cases, the situation must be promptly and effectively addressed.

7. Vaginal or urethral discharge

This is a typical and common symptom of a sexually transmitted disease. The discharge from the vagina or urethra can range from transparent and slimy to thick and whitish colored. In women, this discharge is accompanied by pain in the pelvis and abdomen. Men also have a discharge that can cause some sort of a burning sensation. This happens in the case of chlamydia, gonorrhea and such type of other STDs. If these occur after unprotected sex or intercourse with a non-regular partner, you should definitely consult a doctor to check whether the discharge could signify an ST
