Smart ways to deal with anxiety

Anxiety and depression are two commonly faced chronic health problems. This two phenomenon are some what co-related. One can encourage the other. Anxiety is very prominent in today’s fast paced world and it’s the root cause of many health related issues and mental problems. Many people tend to worry too much about things that have no solution. This only leads to unnecessary complications in life and hence, depression sets in. If anxiety is not dealt with, not only life would become painful but also, it may cause serious heart problems like high BP and stroke. Follow some of these strategies to diminish your worries.

1. Take frequent breaks and vacations from work

Working vigorously puts too much mental and physical stress. Do not deprive yourself of deserving breaks. Take frequent breaks from your work to release some tension. Some people think they’re coping well with stress, but sooner or later, they are bound to suffer from the ill-effects. Take couple of short coffee breaks at work and an extended lunch break, if possible. So, you can enjoy your meal and rest a little. Take some day offs or leaves and go on a vacation at least twice a year. This will allow you to refresh your mind. Stay away from work on weekends.

2. Keep worries up for later

Sometimes, we worry too much about things which might happen somewhere in future. This creates heavy anxiety and leads to a lot of mental stress. There is a simple solution to such a situation. Just put away your worries for another day. Tell yourself that it’s not going to happen for quite a while and get involved in something else. Get away from your worries by involving yourself in light forms of entertainment like stand up comedy, comedy movies and music concerts. Whenever there is a problem, divert your mind.

3. Exercise regularly

Exercise is the greatest way to rid your mind of stress, anxiety and depression. Working out induces the secretion of endorphin and serotonin, the feel good hormones. This in turn reduces anxiety and depression. It keeps your mind fresh and mood elevated. So, make an exercise regime and hit the gym regularly. Exercising regularly will also provide you a break from lingering on your problems and concerns. Perform some yoga and meditation as well to achieve mental peace.

4. Don’t be alone

Loneliness is another fatal problem, which can be the cause as well as the result of anxiety. Loneliness causes anxiety. When we’re alone, we tend to worry about our lives too much and there is no one to share our problems with. So, this leads to both anxiety and depression. When we are too stressed out we want to be left alone. Try to involve yourself in some occupying activities, which are light and can keep you away from your troubles. Be it reading a book, painting, playing or listening to music, playing video games or social networking.

5. Control your thoughts and take action

Controlling thoughts and taking action can be somewhat co-related too. We’re talking about those decisions which make you think twice, thrice or maybe even more. Now, there are some things in life which need to be evaluated after careful deliberation and consideration, but some things are unnecessarily worried about, before actually doing them. Controlling your thoughts are the key to reducing anxiety and worry. Sometimes, we are overpowered by our own thoughts. We tend to consider all those thoughts to be true. This is a big mistake. We are often wrong. Besides, we have the ability to correct ourselves by deciding which thoughts to pursue and the ones to obliterate. A determined mind can prevent impulsive and wrong thoughts from taking hold of our lives.

Sometimes, solutions are very simple. However, we tend to disregard them, thinking that they’re too simplistic and useless. However, the fact is that if you are worried about not saving enough money, simply spend less. If you’re fat, then eat less. It’s as simple as that, if you believe in it.

Take action and work for finding a resolution rather than worrying about the future. Believe that you can make your own future. You will feel much better.

6. Don’t expect too much from anything

Expectation is another determining factor in one’s satisfaction. Sometimes, winning is not enough, because we want more. This is the moment when disappointment sinks in. Too much expectation from something creates too much pressure. When you cannot cope with that pressure, it leads to failure. Failure causes disappointment and eventually depression. As we mentioned before, depression and anxiety go hand in hand most of the times.

So, try to be happy with what you’re getting at present. Winning and losing are part and parcel of our lives. Do not consider yourself a failure because of petty reasons like having to move back in with your parents, or not being the best athlete in your college. Life can be more worthwhile than that!
