Fibroids Symptoms

Fibroids: Symptoms

Top Symptoms

1. Pain in the pelvic region

The pelvic region is affected as and when the tumor grows. Most women notice that the pain worsens as they menstruate, as the fibroid tumor swells during increased hormone activity in the body. Intercourse too would be painful as it can irritate the fibroids in the uterus. Bleeding and spotting may be detected during and after an intercourse.

2. Abdominal pressure and swelling

This is one of the earliest signs of fibroids. Most women feel an increased sense of pressure from within the abdomen in the presence of fibroids. This is concentrated on the lower abdominal region where the fibroids are mostly lodged. The abdominal area will also be swollen due to the growth and is immediately noticeable if the tumor is particularly large. Abdominal pressure and swelling will be followed by abdominal pain as well.

3. Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are caused when the nerves surrounding the rectal region are irritated and start bleeding during the passage of stool. Hemorrhoids can be very painful and can cause a lot of discomfort and difficulty while passing stool. The pressure on the rectum due to fibroids can also lead to constipated stool which will cause the hemorrhoids to worsen. To reduce hemorrhoids, one must increase fiber intake and drink lots of water so that the stool remains adequately loose and prevents friction on the rectal region.

4. Bowel difficulty

Fibroids also pose the risk of developing bowel problems as it exerts its influence on the colon as well. Pressure on the colon will lead to difficulty in passing stool thereby aggravating the problem. Constipation due to fibroids can also be triggered when women are advised to take iron supplements to combat the blood loss associated with abnormal menstruation. Iron intake leads to constipated stool and to prevent this one has to increase their intake of fiber.

5. Bladder irregularities

The growth of the tumor in the uterus will lead to increased pressure on the bladder. This can cause frequent urination and incontinence. Urination will be accompanied by pain and a burning sensation which will be persistent in spite of undergoing natural treatment and taking medications for infections. Bladder irregularities can lead to the urine getting trapped in the bladder and creating a conducive environment for germs to thrive.

6. Irregular menstrual cycle

Irregularities in menstruation can be due to fibroid tumors in the abdomen. Menstrual cycle will be affected as the uterine lining will not shed due to the presence of fibroids. This will lead to missed periods, irregular menstruation and spotting or bleeding in between menstruation. Sometimes, women also go through abnormal bleeding and heavy menstruation in the presence of fibroids.

7. Fertility issues

As fibroids are tumors growing inside the uterine wall, most women will have problems conceiving. This is because the blastocyst cannot implant itself in the uterine wall due to the presence of fibroids. The presence of fibroids can also cause the attached egg to get rejected later on as a result of restricted flow of blood to the growing foetus, causing an abortion.
