1. Surgery can be a win win situation

I noticed numbness and tingling in my hands in 2006. I saw specialists at the clinic and they told me that it was due to the moderate carpal tunnel syndrome, I was treated for the same. But after a year the numbness came back and then graduated to extreme pain. It became so severe that it needed surgery. My doctor informed me about the new, minimal invasive procedure for carpal tunnel syndrome. I got my procedures only two weeks apart from each other. It was definitely new to what I have been hearing. It was a much lesser invasive surgery to do the same repair now, which is actually amazing. No hiccups have ever surfaced since then, all thanks to my doctor.

2. Ibuprofen didn't help

It started with a mild tingling in my left hand. It slowly graduated into severe uncontrollable pains. I initially took pain killers but even after a week, after a regular intake of ibuprofen, it did not show any improvement. I was waking up thrice or four times at night due to the pain. Earlier it would go back and come back again but this time the pain was a constant and needless to say severe. I remember I visited my doctor with a shaking hand (due to the severe pain) and eyes full of tears. I was struggling with it since three years and now it was at its extreme. As the saying goes late than never, well advised and supported by my friend and colleague, I went ahead for a surgery, it was the carpal tunnel release surgery. After a year now, after the routine checkups and exercises, I have regained the complete movement of my left hand.ย

3. My ignorance worsened my case

I donโ€™t understand why I did, what I did, but it did turn out to be a very bad decision. I tried to find comfort and solution in the pain killers and the old wives tales. My hands suffered continuously, on an on and off basis, for two years. My ignorance for the surgery worsened my carpal tunnel syndrome. Due to my severe wrist condition, I couldnโ€™t even continue with my job. I started off with not wanting a surgery at all but when finally I had to go for it, I was out of the hospital in three hours. It was a successful carpal tunnel release surgery. I was on some after surgery medications and some exercises and I did not have any kind of discomforts at all. It is a stress and a pain free life now. I have realized that I should not have waited so long. ย

4. Surgery helps

I heard that the surgery is considered only when nerve conduction studies showed moderate neuropathy. Well my hands were swelling up and fingers had a strange sensation all through the day. They felt like they will go numb anytime and that scared me very badly. All the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome matched with my condition when I searched for it on the net. For a longer time, there was an off and on sensation but were becoming more constant as the days were passing. The braces customized and molded type soft Velcro was also not working well enough. So, finally my consultant got my hands the carpal tunnel release operation. There was a gap of three months between the two operations. Now after three more months of medicines and exercises, I am a happy and a pain free man.ย

5. My sleepless nights

I started waking up in the night with a tingling sensation in my fingers. Discomfort and tingling in my fingers would wake me up almost every night. It was then that I realized that something was wrong. To feel something like that was pretty weird initially. And there have been instances when my arm also used to go numb completely. My GP suspected it to be the carpal tunnel syndrome and referred me to a local hospital. The doctor got me tested for a new test known as โ€œnerve condition studyโ€. I tested positive for the suspected carpal tunnel syndrome, that too in both hands. My doctor suggested that I should go for the carpal tunnel release operation, that too one hand at a time. I had my right hand operated first and then waited for four months to get my left hand carpal tunnel release operation. I was given injections to ease the pain until my hands were operated. They were open surgeries under local anesthetic. After the operation, for a few days, my hand did feel sore. But the pain transformed into a stinging feeling, but in just a week that too started lessening and finally it was gone. I even started wriggling my fingers after a few exercises given to me. Today after a year, at 58, after two operations respectively that went without a hitch, I have complete movement in my hands and donโ€™t have words enough to thank my doctor and the hospital staff. ย
