1. A third grade student showed me the way

I always treated asthma as my greatest enemy. I am 22 years old and have been suffering from this agony for the last 3 years. Whenever I suffered an attack I used to panic as if it was my last day on earth. I am a school teacher and one day a third grade student in my class suffered an asthma attack. It was a very difficult situation for me as all these years I have tried to escape such a painful situation. But I was overwhelmed by her bravery and strength. She was very calm and was trying to breathe with her eyes closed. She didnโ€™t even let the class know about her attack and simply took out an inhaler without panicking. She handled the situation with poise as the doctors have always asked me to. That young girl changed my outlook towards this problem. Now, whenever I suffer an asthma attack I recall that day and find strength to fight it. I am very proud to have such a student in my class.

2. Better late than never

I am 69 years old and have been suffering from asthma for the last 40 years. It became a part of my life and I would ignore my health condition. But with age my problem aggravated and I realized that I was not able to breathe easily. My body had adapted to inhalers and antibiotics so the doctors couldnโ€™t do much. Age was also another barrier that stopped them from experimenting with my body. Then one day my daughter asked me to at least try resisting oily food. I am a slave to my taste buds and resistingy food was the last thing I would like to do on this earth. Nothing could be more challenging than asking to leave 40 year old habits and tastes. Resisting banana, curd, fried food, butter, taro roots, meat etc was really difficult but I didnโ€™t give up and itโ€™s been a month since I ate any of these things, and to my surprise I feel better now. Little did I know that these foods were aggravating my asthma problem!

3. Yoga exercises – a welcome change

Had I ever known that practicing breathing exercise could change my life, I would have started it 10 years back. I am 25 years old and have been suffering from this painful problem since I was 14. I was totally dependent on inhalers and medicines. My life was dreadful as I could not sleep, could not go out in dust, rain and could not even celebrate festival like Diwali and Holi that I once used to love. Seeing my suffering one of my close friends convinced me to join a Yogic Breathing Program. Taking out time for attending it was a big challenge for me because of busy working hours but somehow I managed. I was surprised to know how comprehensive breathing could be and followed each and every exercise fastidiously. My asthma condition showed great improvement and now I hardly use any inhalers or medicines.ย
