ADD/ADHD: Symptoms

Top Symptoms

1. Careless attitude

Due to their frequently shifting interests, the children with ADHD display a very careless attitude towards everything. They might not put value in anything and tend to lead an incoherent way of living.

2. Inappropriate responses

If put in plain words, children with ADHD don’t think before they speak. They may blurt out inappropriate comments. On several occasions, they may become emotional without restraint. Children with ADHD may display anger or may cry in social situations without noticing whether such an emotional behavior is required during that social situation or not. They act without knowing or understanding the consequences. At school or home, these kids may throw tantrums even when they have an idea that such a behavior will get them punished.

3. Impatience

Children with ADHD show symptoms of impulsiveness and are more impatient when compared to other children of their age group. They may indulge in fights if they are not given what they want and may appear quite stubborn.

4. Impulsiveness

These children tend to be very impulsive. For example, they might do something that is completely unexpected and uncalled for. They often face frequent mood swings as well.

5. Hyperactivity

These kids are always found to be moving around. Their teachers may identify them as ‘running on a motor’. They may touch or play with anything and everything in sight, and have trouble sitting in one place during school time or dinner.

6. Fidgeting

Children with ADHD show hyperactivity. They cannot sit still. So, they may fidget and squirm on their seats while they are in a classroom. They may talk nonstop and might not consider listening to others. Because of this, these kids may have fewer friends in schools. In some cases, they may try to bully others and miss their classes.

7. Daydreaming

Most children tend to day dream. But, kids with ADHD day dream so much that it interferes with their daily functioning. They may not always respond when spoken to, which may make them appear stubborn or disrespectful. Such kids may have difficulty in processing information when compared to other kids of their age group. This is also a reason behind their struggle to obey orders or follow instructions.

8. Trouble with completing school work

These children get bored so easily that they might not complete their homework on a regular basis. They face trouble completing assignments and have a tendency of losing track of their possessions, like pencils or toys.

9. Lack of organizational skills

Children with ADHD face a major difficulty in focusing their attention or organizing activities. Therefore, their rooms may always be dirty even after repeated requests for tidying their stuff or cupboards. This lack of attention causes inability to complete a task or learn something new. So, a child with ADHD may not be able to follow a set of instructions.

10. Boredom

Children with ADHD are easily bored until and unless they are doing something very interesting or enjoyable. That is one of the prime reasons that these children may not like to study and may start roaming around every time they are asked to learn. Although, this trait is seen in most kids, but with an ADHD child this trait may be more visible and more intense.

11. Distraction

Children with ADHD may be easily distracted. They have a tendency of missing details and forgetting things. Their difficulty to focus on one thing may prompt them to frequently switch from one activity to another. For instance, an ADHD child could be talking at one point of time and might start dancing at the next moment.
