Psychometric testing is not used for diagnosing ADHD in all adults. It is used to determine the impact of the presence of ADHD in the person. With this test, both personality and IQ level of a person are assessed. The clinician chooses appropriate tests based on the condition of the patients.

The standardized behavior evaluation scales may be included in the comprehensive evaluation. The most commonly used standardized scale is the ADHD checklist to be found in the fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder. Other behavior rating scales that can be used include Wender Utah Rating Scale, the Copeland Symptom Checklist for Adult ADHD, and the Brown Adult Attention Deficit Disorder Scale. These are given to patients to complete on their own. In order to diagnose ADHD in an adult, the clinician may use one or more of the standardized rating scales.
