Studies reveal skipping breakfast linked to heart related disorders and diseases


Breakfast is said to be the most important meal of the day, and is said so for a reason. We are living in an era of constant competition and a never ending rat race. Every morning we are in an unexplainable rush to reach somewhere, be it office, work, school, or any other place of importance. Not only the employed population and students, but also homemakers are known not to give much importance to this meal.

Why is breakfast so important?

The main reason for lack of vitamins and minerals in the body is skipping breakfast. Obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and other similar diseases are all results of the same. Not only the quantity of your breakfast, but its quality matters as well. It’s not how much you eat but also what you eat. It is very important to keep in mind the nutritional value of the food that you consume in the morning. There is a specific time when your body is in best position to extract maximum number of nutrients from a particular food item, and usually, this time is in the morning. Some foods consumed at midnight or at some other time of the day may not provide this much of nutrition.

Missing out on breakfast is one of the most important causes due to which one ends up in a state of heart disorder. Starting your day on an empty stomach makes you gorge up on food later in the day. Hogging leads to over-intake of calories and cholesterol. And it is no news that overeating, obesity and clogged arteries are all linked to each other. Someone who kick-starts the day with a proper, healthy and nourishing breakfast is always at low risk of heart disorders.

Fats calcium and other substances accumulate to form plaques in the arteries. As per a recent study, it was found that as much as 75% of the total number of people who skipped breakfast failed to meet 2/3rd of the RDA for vitamins and minerals. This is in comparison with the 41% people who were found to consume a good breakfast.



Skipping breakfast can cause atherosclerosis, which leads to strokes. Atherosclerosis is deposition of fat, calcium and other substance in the arteries. Many people go under crash diets in order to lose weight. According to Kim Larson, the founder of a nutrition consulting company, skipping breakfast in order to lose weight is not a good idea as it has a severe negative impact on the functioning of the body throughout the day. People skipping morning meals are more likely to gain more number of calories compared to people who have breakfast.

What should you eat for breakfast?


It is not just eating breakfast that is necessary, but you should also take in a good deal of diet as the first meal of the day. Nuts, oats, fruits, carbs, protein can make up a healthy breakfast. It does not need to be exotic to be healthy. Whole grain bread, yogurt, butter, eggs, fruits will help you provide a balanced morning meal. Some people prefer lean meat, sea foods and vegetables for breakfast. Majority of dieticians also recommends diet that includes fats and carbohydrates.

Eggs give you enough protein required by your body. Egg yolk gives you antioxidants which helps in preventing cataract and other eye disorders, along with decreasing your chances of a heart disorder. Dairy products and yogurt can help you manage weight because they have the ability to promote hormone levels such as PYY and GLP-1. Oat meal also plays a major role and can help in reducing cholesterol levels in your body.
