Can anyone suggest me tips to tone my body?

I weigh around 250 pounds and I am just 20 years old and I am not happy about it. I want shape up my body. My sister has a great body and looking at her I have now decided I will follow a healthy diet regime and exercise. I want names of some exercises which would help me out with my stomach and my thighs. I really tone these parts of my body. Where should I start? I have been to a couple of gyms around the neighborhood; none of them seem to be of my interest. Can I start at home?
