Back Pain: Diagnosis

Top Diagnosis

1. Bone Scan

Bone scan test is used to know the cause for back pain. The damages caused like bone cancer, problem causing infections and bone trauma can be identified using the bone scan method of diagnosis. Bone scan can usually identify a problematic bone disease faster than the x-ray method. Here a radioactive element called tracer is vaccinated into a vein in limb that moves into the veins and into bones. If the tracer appears dark in certain areas, then those areas are said to have a lack of blood supply to the bone. Sometimes it results in bone cancer. Areas where the tracer is bright may show problems like arthritis, tumor, fracture, or some kind of infection.

2. X-ray

X-ray is the most basic tool used to identify back pain in a person. These examinations are done comprising of an x-ray apparatus. In this an image of the skeletal structure of the spinal column is pictured. The medic will then investigate the spine bones and analyze the structure of our back. There is no kind of threat involved in taking an x-ray. However, our body may be exposed to a petite quantity of radiation.

3. MRI

MRI or Magnetic Resonance Imaging can be used to diagnose the back pain. An MRI image depicts the lenient muscle assemblies of the back. This includes the intervertebral discs, the spine, and nerves of the spine. MRI is considered to be the standard method in determining back pain. There is too little menace in taking an MRI test. MRI is not possible for people who have metal transplants in their body. The reason for this is because the transplants may intermingle destructively with the prevailing magnetic energy while undergoing the MRI.

4. CT or CAT Scan

Computed Tomography or CT scan determines the skeletal structure of the spinal cord. This image is three dimensional and of high definition and hence is used by the medic to find even minor fissures in the back bones. This method is too helpful in making a back pain diagnosis. The CT scan will not expose the person to high quantities of radiation. Henceforth it is greatly recommended to all patients with severe back pain.

5. Bone Mineral Density

The BMD test helps in calculating the compactness of minerals present in our bones. A distinctive x-ray or CT scan is used in this test. The outcome of the test helps in estimating the strength of the patientโ€™s bones. As people age they may lose the bone mass and the bone becomes thinner. The bone breaks down faster and the condition is referred to as osteopenia. This may further lead to osteoporosis. It is most common in older women than men.

6. Antinuclear Antibodies (ANA)

The ANA test assesses the quantity and arrangement of antibodies in blood that affects our own body. The medical term for this is called as autoimmune reaction. The immune system of the body usually bouts and kills foreign bodies like virus and bacteria. But in the above mentioned illness, the immune system works against and kills the body’s own regular tissues. When somebody has this disease, the immune system creates antibodies which may stick to the cells of the personโ€™s body. This may appear like foreign agents on their own body thus destroying them slowly. This test is used along with the indications, somatic tests, and certain other examinations to know the presence of an autoimmune infection.

7. Rheumatoid Factor (RF)

The RF test is a kind of blood test which is used to quantify the volume of RF antibody that exists in the personโ€™s blood. Typically, the foreign bodies like bacteria and viruses that invade our bodies are destroyed by the antibodies present in us thus avoiding infection or diseases. However, RF antibody may ascribe to the regular tissues of the body, which may effect in mutilation. To measure the rheumatoid factor in the blood โ€˜agglutination testsโ€™ or โ€˜nephelometry testโ€™ is employed. The rheumatoid factor can be performed to identify rheumatoid arthritis.

8. Chemistry screen

The chemistry screen test is another kind of a blood test that quantifies the intensities of blood constituents like electrolytes. This helps a medic to recognize the overall health status and also look into some complications in the person. Also, it helps in knowing if any particular problem needs critical medical treatment. Sometimes it may help in identifying supplementary elements in the personโ€™s blood, than other tests. Based on the information needed, the required type of chemistry screen test will be prescribed by the medic. It can also be done as a portion of the usual physical tests.
