1. Heart palpitations

Irregular and rapid heartbeats or skips are experienced by the patient and this unusual awareness of the heartbeat is the most common symptoms referred to as palpitations. Palpitations are the most common in people having some cardiac arrhythmia, which can take on different aspects associated with the palpitations. The most common palpitation symptoms are premature ventricular complexes, episodes of atrial fibrillation, premature atrial complexes, episodes of supraventricular tachycardia and the most dangerous form of palpitation which is ventricular tachycardia.

2. Chest pain or chest discomfort

While chest pain may be for other reasons, the possibility of a heart problem can not be ruled out. Chest pain has always been associated with heart problems and most people feel extremely worried when they feel some chest pains. Chest pain can last for a few seconds or extend up to days on end and its symptoms include some pressure, choking or pain in the chest area. There can be numbness and discomfort in the upper abdomen, neck, chest and extending up to the arms, head and jaws. These pains appear periodically, sporadically and sometimes can occur frequently or very rarely. The chest pain descriptions can not be properly termed as they are quite vague and may appear as symptoms in other problems not related to heart disease.ย 

3. Dizziness

People sometimes experience spells of momentary dizziness which make them feel quite lightheaded, although the spell passes when one sits down to rest. There are many other diseases associated with dizziness such as anemia, thyroid problems, diabetes, gastrointestinal disturbances, dehydration, blood disorders and many more. It is therefore imperative that the patient undergoes a thorough medical check up to rule out any possibility of heart disease or other diseases.

4. Shortness of breath

Shortness of breath is a significant indicator that there is some medical problem which needs to be evaluated by a doctor. Shortness of breath occurs even in other lung conditions such as asthma, pneumonia, bronchitis, emphysema and pleural effusion. The shortness of breath with exertion experienced by patients of heart failure happens even when they are lying flat on their back. Sometimes, the person may wake up gasping for breath at night and this condition is referred as paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea. This symptom is also common in valvular heart disease, pericardial disease and cardiac arrhythmia.

5. Syncope or fainting

Generally, many people experience a fainting or loss of consciousness at least once in life and this may not be life threatening. However, when somebody faints or goes into syncope, it is necessary to ensure that this has nothing to do with any disease by finding out its cause. Syncope happens in cardiac, metabolic, neurologic and vasomotor cases and the one related to cardiac is the most life threatening.

6. Visible symptoms

People with inherent heart diseaseย have certain visible symptoms which shows on their skin such as blue grey color tone on their face, swelling ankles and feet and difficulty in breathing while eating. They may also get fluid build up in their heart or lung and may tire easily while playing or exercising.

7. Fatigue, daytime sleepiness or lethargy

Sleep disturbances are most common in heart patients and this is how somnolence or daytime sleepiness is brought on.When a person with heart disease is unable to continue any task at the normal level, then this is a symptom of fatigue or lethargy. Somnolence, on the other hand, is associated with suddenly falling asleep during the daytime or craving to sleep. This is generally brought about due to lack of sleep at night for various reasons such as sleep apnea and insomnia, both of which are very common in heart disease. As with dizziness and fainting, a person having the symptoms of fatigue and somnolence must undergo a thorough check up with a medical expert.
