Genital Herpes: Symptoms

Top Symptoms

1. Muscle cramps

Muscle cramps usually occur along with fever and is one of the primary symptoms associated with genital herpes. After the first outbreak, recurrent outbreaks may not have symptoms like muscles cramps, fever or headache.

2. Lower back pain

Some women experience lower back pain during an outbreak of genital herpes. As lower back pain is very common with all kinds of infections of the reproductive system, lower back pain due to genital herpes is mostly ignored by all women.

3. Abnormal discharge

Based on the location of blisters, most patients will have abnormal discharge from the region of infection. For genital herpes in the vagina, women are mostly met with vaginal discharge that is abnormal and far from normal. Similarly, men will have abnormal discharge from the penis and urethra at the onset of blisters due to genital herpes.

4. Painful urination

During an outbreak of genital herpes, the person will have difficulty and pain while urinating. This is especially the case when the blisters are formed in the vaginal canal, urethra and penis. If the blisters are open and oozing, urination can cause a lot of burning and discomfort in the patient.

5. Lymph node inflammation

Any infection of the body will lead to inflammation of the lymph nodes in the concerned area. With genital herpes, the person will most often be faced with swollen and tender lymph nodes in the groin area. This, however, is a common symptom associated with many diseases of the reproductive organs and hence must not be taken as a sure symptom of genital herpes. If lymph node inflammation in the groin area surfaces along with blisters and flu, make sure that you plan a visit to the doctor to check for genital herpes.

6. Painful and oozing sores

Blisters that ooze and become shallow are associated with genital herpes. These blisters can be very painful and can cause a lot of discomfort in the patient. They can last for a few days to months and can sometimes subside on their own without any treatment.

7. Blister formations

Blisters associated with genital herpes can be very painful and itchy. In men, the blisters are concentrated mostly on the penis. In women, blisters appear on the vulva, inside the vaginal canal or in the urethra. Blister formations can sometimes be found in the anus, thighs, scrotum, rectum etc. They can be as big as a coin or very small and difficult to notice. Any blisters, whether big or small must therefore be carefully analyzed and reported to the doctor to check for genital herpes.

8. Tingling, burning and redness

Before an outbreak of genital herpes, the person will have a certain tingling sensation in the site of outbreak. This will be followed by redness, itching or even a burning sensation before genital herpes blisters appear on the site.

9. Flu symptoms

Primary outbreak of genital herpes will be met with flu like symptoms which will last longer than recurrent outbreaks. Typical symptoms include headache, fever and general malaise. These symptoms might last for a week and subside. However, symptoms vary greatly from person to person and hence do not follow a definite pattern.
