Female Incontinence: Symptoms

Top Symptoms

1. Emotional stress

If a woman is under heavy emotional stress for a ling period of time, it can lead to incontinence. Emotional stress is usually personal, that is, problems in family life or love relationships. The stress makes the body lessen its control over the bladder muscles and as a result, the woman has urinary incontinence.ย

2. Leaking urine

Normally, when a woman has her periods, the stomach, bladder and the vaginal muscles becomes loose, which may sometimes cause incontinence. But the condition should improve itself once the periods are over. However, if the condition persists leading to urine leakage every time the woman coughs, sneezes or laughs, then it is a serious case of stress incontinence.

3. Urge to urinate often

Women who suffer from urge incontinence are more likely to pay visits to the washroom. In this, the woman has the urge to urinate very often and in the case of non-availability of a washroom, the woman urinates in her undergarments, soaking the clothes and running down the legs. This urge can also be caused if the woman hears water running or touches cold water. This kind of urge incontinence is very difficult to control.ย

4. Both stress and urge

If the woman is experiencing urine incontinence because of both stress and an urge to urinate often, medical experts diagnose it as mixed incontinence. A woman with this condition is typically seen to have weak immune system, sneezing and coughing all the time, and making rounds of the washroom and changing clothes often. Almost 25 million Americans suffer from this mixed incontinence without ever being aware of the health condition.ย

5. Pregnancy

Sometimes pregnancy too can lead a woman suffer from incontinence, any of the three kinds: Stress, urge or mixed, as explained above. In this condition, the problem erupts at the later stage of the pregnancy. Most of it caused because of stress and moreover, during the end of the pregnancy term, the woman becomes so bloated and heavy that it pushes or puts pressure on the bladder to pass urine.ย

6. Frequent bladder infections

A woman with urinary incontinence will often have bladder infections or vaginal infections. This is caused both because of unhygienic conditions and other medical factors. When bladder infection happens, it means that the bladder muscles become weak and they cannot control the urge to pass urine. The muscles relax and there is involuntary passing of urine. In this condition, the woman is often seen in a nervous state and continuously running to the washroom for relief. In fact, the urge to pass urine in bladder infection is sometimes a false signal, and sometimes it may lead to difficulty in passing urine. There can be irritation near the vagina and a clear burning sensation when the urine passes.ย

7. Frequent night urination

Unless proved otherwise, a woman who frequently visits the washroom at night has a high chance of suffering from urine incontinence. Specifically, if you visit the washroom at night more than twice, it is a cause for concern. At night, the bladder becomes easily full because of the water you have consumed during the day and since the bladder muscles are weak, there is a constant urge to pass urine at night. If you do this more than twice on any given night, chances are that you are suffering from urine incontinence.ย
