1. Follow a healthy diet

Maintain a healthy diet that is rich in omega 3 fatty acids, vitamins E, C, zinc, etc. Foods like apples, berries, and onions are beneficial. Foods that boost your immunity levels are also necessary to prevent the outbreak of dermatitis. Avoid foods containing saturated fats. A healthy diet provides you all the nutrients necessary for keeping your body strong and healthy.

2. Essential oil

Applying any of the essential oils can greatly help in preventing eczema. These oils are known to possess excellent healing properties. Some of the best oils that can be used are tea tree, geranium, Melissa, bergamot, etc. While using oils like bergamot or Melissa, dilute them with almond oil (5 drops of essential oil in 2 teaspoons of carrier oil).

3. Avoid scratching

If your skin is prone to eczema, try to avoid scratching to prevent the outbreaks. Though scratching may be difficult to control, try to avoid it as much as possible. If you have long nails, cut them in order to ensure that you do not damage the skin with the nails. If you scratch the areas that are affected by dermatitis, it can worsen the condition and lead to bacterial and viral infections.

4. Moisturize your skin

There are different types of moisturizers available in the drug stores. They are beneficial for topical use especially, for skin types that are prone to dermatitis. Avoid using scented varieties as they may contain various chemicals and alcohol that can trigger the breakouts. Avoid using scented body butter as it is not good for people who have skin prone to eczema. Some moisturizers that can be useful are Lubriderm, Moisturel, Eucerin, Curel, Alpha Keri, and Aquaphor. The best time to apply the moisturizer is immediately after your bath, because it will be quickly absorbed by the skin.

5. Take showers

Too much water can be responsible for eczema outbreaks. Replace your bath with showers. Use only lukewarm water. Avoid using hot water because it can damage sensitive skin. Humidity affects the skin badly. So, try to spend more time inside your home or workplace during the summer. These methods can help you prevent dermatitis to some extent.

6. Drink lots of water

Water is important for your skin and various other functions in the body. It keeps you hydrated always. When the skin is health and hydrated, it prevents the occurrence of eczema. Every person should drink at least 10 glasses of water daily. Another method to hydrate the skin is by using vitamin E oil.

7. Boost your immunity

Atopic eczema is mostly caused by the negative reaction of immunity system. It is also believed to be hereditary. By strengthening the immunity system, you will be able to prevent this type of eczema. Use some immunity boosters such as omega 3 and 9 fatty acids. Various plant extracts can also be very useful in boosting the immunity system and preventing the outbreaks.

8. Keep away from certain foods

Certain foods are known to result in eczema outbreaks. Some of these include yogurt, milk, cheese, seafood, buttermilk, cranberries, beef, plums, wheat, wine, and prunes. Some additives, food colors and preservatives can also cause eczema. Foods that have any of these items may cause eczema outbreaks in some people. So, identifying such foods is necessary to prevent this condition. The doctor may help you to identify the problem foods by eliminating and reintroducing them in your diet. If a certain type of food is identified, it can be avoided.

9. Avoid irritants

Different kinds of irritants such as chemicals, cigarette smoke, mold, pollen, pet dander, hair, and dust mites are responsible for atopic eczema. Whereas, the second type of eczema or contact eczema is caused by irritants like wool, polyester, feathers, detergents, and metals. When you know the irritant, ensure that you do not come in contact with it. Try to use cotton clothes and avoid chemicals and smoke. The pet dander, pollen, and hair in your home can be reduced by using an air purifier. Wearing protective gear such as mask and gloves are also recommended.
