Allergies: Symptoms

Top Symptoms

1. Anxiety

Anxiety is a feeling of nervousness or apprehension and fear, characterized by irritability, sweating and palpitations. It can be triggered as an allergic reaction to various allergies, especially by certain drug and food allergens. It may be accompanied by an increased pulse rate and shortness of breath. Anxiety in allergic cases is usually short lived and can stabilized with anti-histamine and other anti-allergic medications.

2. Low blood pressure

An allergic reaction may lead to dipping of blood pressure. Anaphylaxis or ‘allergic shock’ is a life threatening allergic reaction which usually causes dizziness, and a sudden drop in blood pressure due to a state of shock. It can be caused due to contact with an allergen, especially ingestion of allergens, such as animal dander.

3. Shortness of breath

Shortness of breath, or dyspnea, is caused by effects the allergen on breathing passages, lungs, or heart and blood vessels. Shortness of breath is basically an obstruction in breathing due to spasm of bronchial tubes. It can be caused due to inhalation of an allergen into the lungs, or allergic asthma etc.

4. Dizziness

Dizziness is a reduced sense of balance and muscle function. It is usually associated with feeling faint, week and a loss of balance. The patient might also experience a spinning sensation (vertigo), which may be accompanied by nausea. Dizziness can be caused by an allergic reaction, commonly due to insect (bee, wasp, hornet, etc) sting.

5. Diarrhea

Diarrhea refers to an increase in frequency of bowel movements, and/or loosening of stool. It may be felt like incomplete evacuation or incontinence of stool. Diarrhea is, at times, caused as a result of an allergic reaction, mainly due to food allergies. It may be accompanied by abdominal pain and cramps.

6. Conjunctivitis

Allergic conjunctivitis or allergic eyes, results in the inflammation of tissues that cover the surface of the eyeball. It appears as redness under the eyelids and watery eyes, accompanied by swelling of the membranes and itching. Conjunctivitis is also known as pink eye, as the eyes appear pink due to the inflammation of membranes and frequent itching.

7. Itchy ear

Itching of the ears can be caused by allergies, specifically allergic eczema. It is characterized by mild or intense itching and redness. It is a common allergic reaction which can be made tolerable with creams and decongestants.

8. Allergic eczema

Allergic eczema, usually associated with allergic rhinitis, is a type of allergic skin rash which is not caused due to skin contact with an allergen, but airborne and other allergies. It is characterized by skin redness, dryness and itching anywhere on the body. It may also appear as a rash on the face, around the eyes and is more common in children.

9. Hives

Hives or urticaria is an inflammation in the form of red welts, accompanied by intense itching. Hives can occur anywhere on the body, and are caused by allergic reactions, especially due to skin contact with an allergen. Hives can also be caused due to food or medication allergies, and appear as swellings on the body.

10. Stuffy and runny nose

The term ‘runny nose’ is often used for uncontrolled fluid discharge from the nasal passages. It is caused by congestion and/or swelling of the nasal passages and sinuses. Stuffy nose refers to obstruction of air flow through the nasal passage. Both the symptoms are common allergic reactions to airborne allergies such as allergic rhinitis and asthma.

11. Post-nasal drip

Post-nasal drip or ‘throat clearing’ refers to mucus accumulation in the throat and back of the nose, which might drip, or give a sensation of dripping out of the nose. It is among the most common symptoms which occur due airborne allergens such as pollen or dust. Post-nasal drip is a progressive symptom of hay fever (allergic rhinitis), which is among the most common allergies.
