Allergies: Prevention

Top Prevention

1. Keep a hygienic routine at school, home and work

Hygiene is the key to allergy free life. One should keep his/her home, school and workplace clean. He/she should avoid working in places where allergy causing agents, such as carbon and asbestos, is in close proximity. He/she should wash hands and clothes thoroughly after coming from outside, and use clean utensils for preparing food. Slackness in hygiene should not appear at any point of life.

2. Avoid getting bitten by insects

Insect bites also cause allergies. Bites from bees lead to swelling and pain in the body; mosquito bites, at times, create rashes all over the body. So, in order to avoid insect triggering allergens, the person, both healthy and allergic should keep his/her surroundings free of the insects by using nets, insect repellents and other precautionary measures. One should refrain himself/herself from going near a beehives or anthill or any other abode of insects. While going on camping or traveling, he/she should keep the windows closed, apply insect repellent creams and stay away from places which can be the abode of the insects, such as contaminated water and flower beds. If an insect bite occurs, he/she immediately consult a doctor.

3. Avoid savoring allergy triggering food

Allergies due to inhalation is not as lethal as those caused by ingestion of food. There have been cases of deaths of peanut allergic patients due to ingestion of peanut oil or peanuts. What’s worse with food triggering allergies is that, even when the person stands near the food, in case of strawberries and peanuts, he/she is immediately diagnosed with the allergic reaction.

In order to avoid food triggering allergies, the patient should have detailed knowledge of what he/she is actually eating or drinking. He/she should refrain from food that may cause allergies. While traveling, the allergic person should know every term used in other places for the allergen, and make sure that he/she does not consume it. The restaurants and eatables manufacturing companies should print warnings of presence of allergy causing agents in the products, so that the patient does not accidentally ingests it. If the food ingredients of a certain dish is not mentioned, the patient should ask the management or the shopkeeper for the details of the dish. Strict regulatory practices should be followed to ensure the usage of correct ingredients for preparation of food and drink. This practice should be adopted throughout the life or as the allergy persists.

4. Avoid getting close to allergy triggering animals and birds

Animal fur, especially those of dogs and cats, are major allergens, which can trigger embarrassing or lethal allergies, such as swelling, sneezing, asthma and death. Death is a rare case, happening when the allergy causing animal is not removed from the vicinity soon. In order to avoid this, the patient should stay away from these animals, and refrain from having a pet at home. The same is applicable for allergies caused by birds.

5. Avoid outdoor allergens

Outdoor allergens include loose hair, pollen-grains, molds, suspended particles (like carbon) and any other allergen that can be found outside. Avoiding outdoor allergens is more difficult, as it is nearly impossible to remove these allergens from the environment. So, instead of attacking these allergens, it is advisable to take precautionary actions. One should wear a mask while walking through dusty areas. It is better to avoid going out in windy seasons, and in the mornings; it is during this time that pollen-count in the air is highest. Allergic patients should refrain from activities that can cause flying of dirt, pollen, dust and other allergens in the air, such as lawn mowing, sweeping and car washing. Car windows should be kept close while driving. But the best suggestion to avoid outdoor allergens, especially pollen is to move to a more pollen-free, dust-free area that is not affected by pollution.

6. Get rid of indoor allergens

Indoor allergens consist of any allergy-causing agent that can be found in the interiors. They may vary from microbial organisms, such as bacteria, to dust. Nearly all of the indoor allergens cause allergies by inhalation, though there are bacteria and viruses that trigger allergies when ingested through food or water.

In order to get rid of indoor allergens, it is essential to keep the interiors clean and dust-free. Vacuum cleaners should be used regularly to such up hidden dirt, dust and other light particles in the interiors. Clothes from outside should be washed thoroughly and kept in dust free area. Aerosol and perfume usage should be avoided as much as possible. It is recommended to perform pest control in the interiors at least once in a couple of months to keep the place free from insects, pests and microbial organisms.

7. Prevent the contraction of allergies and asthma in child from the very young age

Most of the allergy cases such as asthma and peanut allergy, occur in childhood, as the person is less resistant to the allergen action in this period. So, in order to avoid allergies developing in a person, it is mandatory for his/her parents to take care of the person from a very young age. The person should be kept away from allergy causing agents, such as asbestos, dust and pollen. He/she should not be allowed to play outside or stay in the sun for a long period of time; while sun aggravates the occurrence of allergies, outside atmosphere is laden heavily with allergens (allergy causing agents). Proper hygienic routine should be followed by the child and his/her family members.
