12 Home Remedies for People Troubled by Stomach Flu

Stomach flu is another name for viral gastroenteritis, which is caused due to notovirus, rotavirus,astrovirus, adenovirus etc. This is a contagious disease, and people maintaining poor hygiene are highly vulnerable to this infection. The gastrointestinal tract gets inflamed and is followed by abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, fever or diarrhea. Reaching out to a doctor for treatment is important, but the following home remedies can also be effective in controlling the symptoms. Here are twelve of them.

  1. Have yoghurt:

Fresh yoghurt rich in probiotics is highly beneficial in treating intestinal ailments. The gut-friendly bacteria present in yoghurt fight the infection gradually reducing the symptoms. Home made plain yoghurt free from sugar and flavors would be the right choice.

  1. Drink ginger tea: 

Ginger is a popular anti-inflammatory herb used to treat inflammation and nausea. Boil few pieces of ginger in a cup of water for few minutes and sip the concoction slowly. Drink this tea 2-3 times a day to get better results.

  1. Have ripe banana: 

Ripe bananas rich in potassium and pectin are good to treat stomach ailments. Eating one or two medium sized bananas a day is an effective home remedy for stomach flu.

  1. Take more fluids:

 Vomiting and diarrhea

Vomiting and diarrhea caused by stomach flu may cause dehydration. Therefore, you should rehydrate your body at specific intervals. Drink oral rehydration solution, rice water, tender coconut water or butter milk in small quantities. This will replenish the loss of salts and minerals and will keep you energized.

  1. Have apple 

The antimicrobial property of ACV is highly effective in treating stomach flu. Mix one teaspoonful of ACV in a glass of water and drink it. You can try this 2-3 times a day as per the condition.

  1. Lime:

This commonly available fruit is very good in treating stomach ailments. The acidic lime juice kills stomach infection. Squeeze the juice of a medium sized lime in a glass of water and drink half an hour before meals.

  1. Drink mint tea:

Mint leaves have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Therefore, it is very useful in treating stomach flu. In 2 cups of hot boiled water, add a handful of mint leaves. Boil again for few minutes. Strain the decoction. Allow it to cool and drink it. Try this home remedy twice a day.

  1. Try Cinnamon tea:

This common kitchen spice has high medicinal value and is often used in different home remedies. Its antimicrobial property kills the virus effectively and also reduces abdominal pain.  You can drink cinnamon tea by boiling 1 teaspoonful of cinnamon powder in one and a half cup of boiling water. You can add a little honey to sweeten the drink. Alternatively, you can mix one teaspoonful of cinnamon powder in a glass of warm water and drink it 2-3 times a day.

  1. Treatment with fennel seeds: 

This is another aromatic kitchen spice very useful in treating gastrointestinal ailments. You can chew fennel seeds or drink fennel tea. The antispasmodic nature of fennel seeds reduces gastric cramps instantly. Boiling one teaspoonful of fennel seeds in one cup of water will give a flavored tea. Drink this tea 2-3 times a day for best results.

Chamomile is very effective in soothing gastric pain and abdominal cramps, nausea and vomiting. To prepare Chamomile tea, add 2-3 teaspoons of dried flowers in boiling water and keep it covered for 10 minutes. Strain the liquid and drink it adding little honey or lime juice. 

  1. Turmeric powder: 

Turmeric powder is very good to cure stomach ailments. This widely used kitchen spice has anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties. Add enough turmeric powder in your dishes to get relief from symptoms of stomach flu.
