Is Visipaque much better and effective than other medications ?

I have met one of my friends who has been using visipaque and he said that it is an expensive contrast to his earlier medication and it did nothing to ease the strain on the kidneys. So I need to know if there is any recent medical research on the subject to refute this claim ? Will appreciate your suggestions, please tell me if you guys have ever used it and if it is effective or not.
