Top Prevention

1. Remember that your brain is your most important sex organ

The vast majority of arousal happens in the brain, so brain can be considered as the most important sex organ. Other than this, brain is also your safest sex organ as it informs you and makes you aware of the risk factors, symptoms, transmission methods and methods of prevention.

2. Be comfortable saying no

Having sex is not mandatory, if you are not willing to do so, donโ€™t do it. You donโ€™t need to have sex with someone if you went out for dinner together. If your partner wants to break up with you just because you wonโ€™t sleep with them, then its better to let them do so. In fact, you should not be dating someone like this in the first place. You should even learn to respect your partnerโ€™s decision. Respecting each otherโ€™s decision can help in reducing the risk of STDs as well as, it also makes the bond stronger between you and your partner.

3. Talk to your partner

Clear, honest and open communication with your partner is very important for having safe sex. You must be comfortable with your partner when talking about STDs and safe sex. The safety of your partner is your responsibility, so you must discuss with him/her whether your relationship is exclusive or not. Rather than speaking what your partner wants to hear, try to focus on the truth. You may not be very comfortable while doing so, but this is for your own benefit. Not only will your sex life become much more safer, but it will also be more fulfilling.

4. Get tested regularly and encourage your partner to do the same

If you want to avoid getting an STD, then you have to make sure that you are getting tested regularly. You must also encourage your partner to do the same. You and your partner should always consider getting tested before you enter the relationship. It may happen that you are not at a risk of getting an STD, but your partner may be. You should be tested even more frequently if one or both of you are at a high risk of disease. If you are being treated for an STD, then you should resume your sexual activity only after you are done with the treatment. Otherwise, you may just end up passing it to your partner from whom you will eventually get it back.

5. Donโ€™t drink or take drugs before having sex

If you are starting out impaired by alcohol or drugs, then it will be certainly difficult for you to make responsible choices about your sex life. You are more likely to have sex with someone other than your partner if you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Make up your mind about what you really want to do before planning to go out drinking. Make sure that you stick to what you have decided. Drugs and alcohol can make you vomit, youโ€™ll certainly donโ€™t want this to happen especially if you are on birth control as the pills can lose some of their effectiveness because of vomiting.

6. Have sex only within a mutually monogamous relationship

The chances of the introduction of a new STD is almost negligible if two people in a relationship have sex only with each other. Remaining faithful to each other is a very effective way of limiting the risk of contracting STDs if you and your partner have been tested and are healthy. You need to be honest, not only to your partner but also to yourself. Practicing safe sex and remaining faithful in a relationship keeps you away from the risks of getting STDs.

7. Practice safe sex every time

One of the most effective ways of preventing sexually transmitted disease is to practice safe sex. However, safe sex with a condom, gloves, female condom or with any other appropriate barrier is capable of reducing the risk only if you are consistent. So, you need to have a firm determination about having safe sex every time. Make sure that youโ€™ll never have sex without a condom, especially if your sex life includes anal or vaginal intercourse. Although these barriers are not 100 percent effective always, but they are capable of reducing the risk to a significant extent.
