Diabetes is of two types, type I and II. Type I is insulin dependent diabetes. Persons with type I diabetes needs a daily dose of insulin so as to hold blood glucose levels to shoot. Insulin injections are supposed to be taken by injection shots. Oral intake of insulin is not fruitful as the acids in your stomach destroy it. Most of the patients have to learn how to inject insulin themselves which is a simple procedure.

Insulin is very often injected into the abdomen. Prefer changing the injected areas every time. This would help check skin problems. You can leave approx one inch space and inject. Maintain distance from your belly button.

What You Need

  1. Bottle or bottles of insulin

  2. Syringe

  3. Alcohol wipe

  4. Cotton balls

Procedure to take insulin injection

Now, follow the below mentioned steps for preparing and giving insulin shots:

1. Thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water. Dry them.

2. Mix the insulin by gently rotating the bottle between your palms or else you can mix it by capsizing the insulin bottle slowly from end to end.

3. Gently take off the cap and clean the top and neck of the bottle with sterilized cotton ball soaked in alcohol.

4. Uncover the syringe needle and pull back the plunger, filling it with air only, till the marking matching to your insulin dose recommended by the doctor.

5. Insert the needle in the insulin bottle and release the air, filled in syringe, into the insulin.

6. Now fill your syringe with insulin by pulling the plunger back till the marking. Make sure that your syringe does not suck in air bubbles. If you observe air bubbles in the syringe, discard the dose and repeat the process from step 4. Remember not to inject the insulin back in the bottle.

7. Discard the extra amount of insulin outside the bottle. DO NOT INJECT THE INSULIN BACK IN THE BOTTLE.

8. Choose the site for the shot very cautiously. You can always consult your doctor and decide on the sites.

9. Clean the skin, where the insulin is to be injected, with an alcohol swab.

10. Pinch an area of the skin and insert the insulin filled needle at a right angle fully in the skin. Push the plunger slowly and cautiously so as to inject the insulin into your body. Now you can release the pinched skin.

11. Cautiously pull the needle out and clean the area with swab. Avoid rubbing the site of injection.

12. DISPOSE OFF THE NEEDLE AFTER USE. Don’t reuse the needle even if it is used by you only. Take fresh needle every time.

Storing Your Insulin

1. You can store insulin bottles in the door of the refrigerator so as to keep it straight.

2. Never freeze the insulin. A Max temp insulin need is 86°F (30.0°C). Maintaining the right temperature is very important. Same applies for the syringes too.

3. Expired insulin should not be used even if it got expired a day before.

4. Wherever you go carry all your supplies with you. Don’t miss out your dose. There are special insulated bags for this purpose. Never put the insulin and supplies in luggage. Keep it with you.
