Myths about aging

Aging is a term for the changes that occur in the body with age. Here are the myths that are often related to it.

Senility is a normal part of aging.
Failing in physical and mental capabilities is not normal, as you grow old. Yes, loss of muscle mass and decline in cell-mediated immunity can lead to senility, but this can be corrected with geriatric nutrition. Scientists from Tufts University reveal that senility occurs in the elderly due to low folate levels and lack of Vitamin B6 and B12 in their diet. Low folate level causes forgetfulness, irritability and depression. Lack of Vitamin B6 triggers a disorder in the nervous system that makes the limbs feel numb. B12 deficiency results in mood disturbances. Scientists say that nutrient deficiencies can be prevalent in a person from his youth, but they show up only in old age.Falling more often is a normal part of aging.

The reason of falls in adulthood are usually Vitamin D deficiency, an eyesight problem or simply failing to notice an object that can happen at any age. A fall does not mean that an adult should lose his independence or mental stability. The adult should be encouraged to live an active life. But, attention must be paid to lifestyle. For Instance, Vitamin D and calcium can be introduced in the adult’s daily diet.

Losing one’s teeth is a normal part of aging.
Part of this myth is true. Periodontitis, or late stage gum disease results in tooth loss in adults. However, this is not applicable to all adults. Adults with a strong immunity system usually keep most of their teeth until they die. Controlling lifestyle behaviors like poor eating habits, stress and cigarette smoking, help adults keep their teeth for a longer span. Also, oral hygiene and replacement of used toothbrushes with new ones every two-three weeks, helps keep periodontitis and gum diseases at bay.The older you get, the sicker you become.
The immunity system weakens as one ages. This makes adults more prone to infections and diseases. Scientists and researchers believe that if the immunity system of an adult is strengthened with nutritious foods, food supplements and light exercises, sickness will hardly ever be a consequence of aging.Lifestyle changes are not required during the aging process.

Lifestyle changes affect the aging process considerably. Lifestyle changes are essential at each stage of life. Quitting smoking, exercising regularly, consuming fiber rich foods (vegetables and fruits) and taking additional health supplements as prescribed by a nutritionist can prevent chronic illnesses, early death and even slow or reverse organ weakening. Getting involved in conversations and being active in some kind of work or hobby helps to keep the mind young and knowledgeable.

Depression is an outcome of aging.
Surveys have found that there is less depression among older people than assumed. Older people only get depressed, as they have more free time and no company. Taking up an activity and following a daily schedule will help people stay happy and active.Eating habits must not change while aging.
Eating habits must change with age. Good eating habits reduce signs of aging. Just as toddlers, tweens and teens have different dietary needs, the elderly have different nutritional requirements . Researchers find 40% of elderly people to be nutritionally deficient. This can be as a result of: medication impairing nutrient availability, loss of appetite, chronic diseases, dental problems and also because isolated living makes the elderly less interested in food. Stomach acids decline during old age affecting nutrient absorption. Moreover, the elderly are unable to detect salt and sweet tastes. Hence, food with fewer spices and inclusion of fruits and certain raw vegetables in the diet assures better nutrient absorption and contentment.Aging is detrimental to sex.
On conducting a survey of 3,005 people between ages 57 – 85, it has been observed that the chances of being sexually active in old age depends only on the health of a couple. Those, who are fit and healthy, have intercourse two to three times monthly.Arthritis is an outcome of aging.
Arthritis is more common in adulthood only because the cartilage tissue undergoes a lot of wear and tear in earlier days. Arthritis in adulthood can be controlled by medication and physiotherapy. It can be avoided by maintaining weight, wearing comfortable shoes and not overexert in joint-debilitating activities like running, playing football and basketball in early life.
