Liver Failure: Prevention

Top Prevention

1. Prevention of liver cancer

This can be achieved in two ways. The first step is to avoid alcohol use and prevent occurrence of hepatitis B or hepatitis C. These diseases are acquired by blood mixing with any affected individual’s and through sexual intercourse. Thus, it can be prevented by using fresh needle for each individual and by refusing blood donation of any infected person. Also, each newborn should be vaccinated with hepatitis at the time of birth. The second step is to prevent cirrhosis through removal of infected liver through liver transplant.

2. Prevention of cirrhosis

Cirrhosis is caused due to use of alcohol or hepatitis B or hepatitis C. So, use of alcohol has to be prevented and you should use hepatitis vaccine to remain safe from their attack. Sometimes cirrhosis may be a result of genetic complication or disorders like autoimmune hepatitis, metabolic disorders, primary biliary cirrhosis, and primary sclerosing cholangitis which cannot really be prevented.

3. Preventing spread of viral hepatitis

Main sources of hepatitis are blood transfusion and/or unhygienic condition. Hence, proper hygiene has to be maintained to prevent it. Blood should be screened before transmission. Also, all newborns should be vaccinated. If a person has been exposed to Hepatitis B, an antibody mixture can be administered to help protect him/her from contracting the disease.

4. Preventing harmful medicines

Always consult to a good doctor before taking any injection or medicine. Do not exceed dosage of drugs like acetaminophen. Avoid taking drugs like aspirin or ibuprofen as long as possible as they cause gastritis which may result into liver failure. Also avoid hepatotoxic drugs, iron supplements or any kind of intravenous drug. However, fluoroquinolone and cephalosporins are comparatively safer.

5. Maintaining proper diet

Proper diet habits help prevent liver failure mainly those which occur due to non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases. Abstain from consuming fatty food. A recent research conducted on mice revealed that diets rich in high-glycemic carbohydrate (such as white rice) may lead to fatty liver disease. Do not eat wild mushroom as they are poisonous to liver.

6. Avoid drinking alcohol, instead drink red wine

As a recent research at University of California-San Diego School of Medicine has revealed that drinking red wine daily reduces risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Also, drinking coffee daily reduces risk of liver failure in case of alcohol addicts.

7. Prevent from getting overweight

Research has shown that losing body fat through daily exercises can reverse the effect of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. If you are obese a drug called orlistat (xenical) can help decrease absorption of fat in body.

8. Maintain clean habits

It is possible to get infected with liver diseases by using needles or toothbrush of infected person or by having sexual intercourse with the infected person. Hence, if you use needle for injection, tattoo or any other kind of body piercing make sure that it is clean and fresh. Also, use condoms to have sex.

9. Prevent using fungicide and insecticides

At the time of using aerosol cleaner keep the room ventilated and wear a protective mask. Also, wear mask at the time of spraying pesticides, fungicide, paint, or other toxic chemicals. Changing the way grains are stored could reduce exposure to toxic fungi which are cancer producers. Not only our diet, but also our lifestyle and daily activities should be improved in order to prevent acute liver failure.
