How much exercise is one supposed to do to lose weight?

I am struggling with this stubborn problem called overweight for last couple of years now. I can’t just get along well with my cousins who are so slim despite of eating all the time. I do not really overeat and I also walk the stairs up and down every day for 30 minutes, but it’s not helping. What exercise shall I take to lose weight? Could anyone suggest me, which exercises are not prolonged and can be performed at home, as I cannot go to gym due to my hectic work schedule?
