Dengue Fever: Research

Top Research

1. Bacteria to control dengue fever

Scientists have claimed to create dengue-free mosquitoes by introducing to them a non-virulent strain of common and widespread group of bacteria called Wolbachia. This bacteria strain found in fruitfly Drosphila in the laboratory is likely to shorten the life span of mosquito as a result of which the mosquito will die long before the dengue virus can develop within it. Since there are no vaccines for dengue, scientists are aiming at controlling the mosquito population. The success of this procedure can definitely help keeping dengue at bay in the future.

2. Early Detection of dengue fever

Dengue fever is usually accompanied by symptoms like flu, joint aches and even before dengue is confirmed, it is usually seen that patients have already reached the final stages. Hence, scientists had been looking forward for tests that would help detect dengue fever and also differentiate between dengue and dengue hemorrhagic fever at an early stage. Recently, scientists have found out that the culture of a protein called cytokine IL-10 and seven other distinct proteins can help detect dengue early. This finding was found successful over all the 100 cases on which it was tested and surely can bring about a revolutionary change in the diagnostics and treatment of the disease.

3. Immunity against dengue virus

Since there have been no vaccines and drugs to fight against the dengue virus, scientists have aimed at finding out how to develop our immunity systems so that the virus cannot us affect thoroughly within our body. Researchers have discovered a part of our immune system called mannose-building lectin or MBL which is responsible for the destruction of dengue virus in our body. However, further cultivation is required in this approach.ย
