1. Medical Problems

Medical problems such as anaemia, occlusion in the arteries, hyperthyroidism are known to cause angina too.

2. Alcohol

Alcohol does not directly affect blood oxygen supply but it does lead to weight gain which is one of the causes for high cholesterol. Hence, one should limit ones alcohol intake.

3. Stress

We all live in a busy, stress filled life. But what we do not realise is that stress causes us to lose our anger, indirectly causing angina. Hence, we need to set our priorities and avoid mental stress and relax.

4. Obesity

People who are obese are at a higher risk of heart diseases and angina as they suffer from the three major culprits namely, high blood sugar, high blood pressure and high blood cholesterol. Again, exercise along with a healthy diet with less fat is the best way to beat obesity. Being fit not only makes you look good but also makes you feel great and can avoid a number of ailments.

5. Sedentary Lifestyle

It is very important that one should lead an active lifestyle in order to avoid a number of ailments, angina being one of them. Exercise is the best way to keep angina under control as exercise cuts fat from the body and lowers blood cholesterol and controls blood sugar and blood pressure.

6. Age

As age increases the chances of angina also increases. Men older than 45 and women older than 55 are at a higher risk of chest pain than people who are younger.

7. Family history

It is a known fact that if you have a family history of heart diseases, you are at a greater risk of suffering from it and hence angina too.

8. Diabetes

Uncontrolled Diabetes also damages the arteries and causes plaque formation majorly because people suffering from diabetes are also known to have high level of cholesterol and high blood pressure, both of which further cause less oxygen supply to the heart. People suffering from diabetes are advised to keep their blood sugar in check and also told to keep their blood pressure and cholesterol lower than normal.

High Blood pressure causes the walls of the arteries to get damaged, causing less blood supply to the heart. This can be controlled by avoiding food which has a high salt content, rich and oily food.

Most of us love junk food which is full of fat and salt. Too much consumption of fat rich food leads to high LDL cholesterol level in the blood. Cholesterol forms a major part of the fatty deposits that narrow down the passage of blood through the arteries to the heart and thus leads to angina pain. The best way to tackle high cholesterol is to exercise and eat a healthy diet

11. Smoking

Smoking is one of the leading causes of Angina Pectoris, even if it is long term exposure to second hand smoke. Smoking causes the arteries to become sticky due to the chemicals that enter the system when one smokes. This causes the fatty deposits to stick to artery walls faster than the normal, reducing the oxygen supply to the heart. Also, smoking is known to increase the heart rate which in turn causes the heart to work harder to receive oxygen which is already in less supply due to the narrowing of the arteries. If you are a smoker and have had angina pain the best treatment is to first stop smoking.
