Vaccinations for adults

Today we often hear about new diseases caused by germs or bacteria or many microbes. While we all are aware of the definite course of vaccination needed for newly born babies and infants, adult vaccination is not treated with as much seriousness. This article will help you know everything about adult vaccines.

The list of all vaccines important to be taken by adults are as follows:-

1. Tetanus Vaccine

As we all are aware of the fact that tetanus vaccine is primarily taken to avoid any kind of infection and contamination caused in muscles by bacteria entered via any deep wound or cut. And this particular infection can even lead to severe symptoms such as inability to move the jaw muscles, inability to swallow, kind of stiffness in muscles, muscle spasms (lockjaw) etc.

For prevention, one time dose of vaccine named Tdap (Tetanus,Diptheria,Pertussis) vaccine is advised. Plus Td (Tetanus- Diptheria) vaccine is also there which has to be repeated every 10 years.

2. Vaccine against Chickenpox

If you have not taken any vaccine against chickenpox (also known as Varicella) at early stages of life, then there can be a probability of catching the virus at a later stage. The very significant characteristic of this particular disease is that it is one of the most contagious diseases. This disease when caused in adults becomes more severe and can even be fatal. It becomes more dangerous for pregnant women specifically. In most of the cases, pregnant ladies who suffered from Varicella Pneumonia died. And pregnancy is a stage where one cannot be even vaccinated. Hence, Chickenpox vaccine plays a very important role even in protection against shingles and in community of people who can not be immunized due to some reasons. Two doses are needed to be taken with a gap of four to eight weeks.

3. Vaccine against Shingles (Especially for people above 60)

The same virus which causes Chickenpox in infant stage can cause Shingles at a later stage in life. It mainly occurs in people above 60 years of age and affect eyes. This particular infection extends with occurrence of blisters, rashes around the surface of eyes with a gradually increasing pain. This long term pain is called postherpetic neuralgia. These rashes can even lead to occurrence of chickenpox to others. One dosage of vaccine for old aged people (mainly above 60) can prevent them from Shingles.

4. HPV Vaccine

This particular vaccine is mainly for young men and women. This is given to fight against a virus named Papilloma Virus which causes Cervical cancer in females. As we all know cervical cancer is one of the most widely spread cancers across Asia, specifically. This virus gets mainly transferred through sexual intercourse. It can be given to children above the age of 9 and is available for both male and females till 26 years of age.

5. Vaccine against Meningitis

As we know, our brain is one of the most important parts of our body. This is again one of the crucial vaccination for young people. Basically for people who mainly spend much of their time in crowded places such as college hostels, military barracks and also those who have a very weak immune system. A simple infection from bacterial meningitis can lead to severe disease named meningococcal disease, which may cause malfunctioning of brain and death.

6. Vaccine against Hepatitis

From the past ten years, most of the diseases have been caused by hepatitis named viruses only. Several types of Hepatitis viruses exist in our surroundings, which increases the risk even more. But main advanced types are: Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B. Hepatitis A mainly spreads its infection as a result of the following activities. Such as- consumption of unhealthy or polluted street food or water, street drugs or having sex with more than one partner. Whereas, Hepatitis B mainly causes infection via following ways. For example, transfer of body fluid or blood of an infected person to healthy person; through sexual intercourse or sharing same needle or razor etc. Hepatitis infection may lead to severe liver damage and death. But it is never late. Hepatitis vaccination can be taken at any stage of life.

7. Vaccines for tourists

When one plans for a holiday or travel to another country, it increases the possibility of encountering foreign particles present in newly atmosphere that may spark a reaction. Therefore, one should be prepared with prior vaccinations, depending on the chosen destination. Please consult your doctor for proper medication and vaccination at least 3-4 weeks before the journey. After all precautions is the best prevention from any disease.

8. Vaccines against Flu

Diseases caused by Flu has become very common these days in almost every age group. The advantage of this vaccine is that it is easily accessible because of its availability in schools, pharmacies, supermarkets, clinics, hospitals and churches as well.

9. Vaccine against Pneumococcal Bacteria

This vaccine popularly known as PPSV (Pneumococcal Polysaccharide Vaccine) protects against all types of Pneumococcal Bacteria which causes blood infections and severe Pneumonia. Its severity can even lead to death. People who suffer from chronic infection, have asthma or a weak immune system and are in the age group of 2 to 64 years are mainly recommended.

10. Three in one Vaccine

This particular vaccine helps fight against three major diseases, Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR). Although, all these three diseases have separate vaccinations too but in case you have not been vaccinated so far, then go and consult your doctor about these adult vaccinations. These diseases may even cause pneumonia and encephalitis at later stage of your life.

11. Vaccine against Mumps

Mumps is considered to be one of the most dreadful infections categorized by swelling of salivary gland in neck portion. This contagious infection links with meningitis and painful swelling of testis and ovaries. So it is advisable for all adults to take the MMR vaccine.

12. Vaccine against Rubella

There is a higher risk of rubella infection in pregnant women as it is spread via air. This particular infection can cause many birth defects in the baby. Apart from it, it can even cause miscarriage or premature delivery. All pregnant women are advised to get immunized with this vaccine at least 4 weeks before getting pregnant. This vaccine is already included in the MMR vaccine.
