1. Create a safe home

Always keep your eyes open and look out for open or unused electrical outlets. Babies and toddlers have a special temptation to stick their fingers into these outlets. This can result in life threatening electrical burns. The best way to prevent such incidents is to cover these outlets with some kind of childproof outlet plugs. Also, switch off electrical devices that are not in use. Have an electrician check the wiring regularly.

2. Safety in the kitchen

Burns are very common in any kitchen. Following some simple measures can reduce the risk of burn injuries. Always use mittens while using the ovens. Never touch the stove top with bare hands. Stand away from hot pans when removing the lid. Avoid mixing hot liquids in the blender. Keep hot pans and other containers away from the reach of children. Similarly, store all the sharp objects like knives, scissors, tongs, forks, etc in a closed cabinet or drawer. Switch off the appliances that are not in use.

3. Monitor water temperature

Hot water can cause serious burn injuries. You need to be very careful while dealing with hot water and water heaters. If the water is 55 degrees C, it can cause serious burns. So, ensure that your thermostat is only 49 degrees Celsius and not more. When you are in the bathroom and need to use both hot and cold water, always turn on the cold water first and then add the hot water according to your requirement.

4. Fireworks safety

Always buy only legal fireworks. Store them according to the instructions given on the label. They should be stored away from the reach of children. Ensure that there is nothing inflammable near the area where the fireworks are stored. Use fireworks outside your home. Never allow children to use the fireworks without elders close by. Always have a bucket of water nearby to put off flames. Fireworks are known to often backfire. Soak all the used fireworks in water before throwing in the trash can.

If you have to work in the sun or remain outside for a long time, you may get sunburns that can damage your skin. To prevent this, always use a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or more. Apply the cream or lotion every thirty minutes to reduce the risk. Wearing sunglasses is also helpful to protect your eyes. Sun-blocking clothes and accessories like hats and long sleeve shirts are helpful.

6. Avoid chemical burns

Chemicals are found in most of the homes in the form of fertilizers, cleaners and insecticides, etc. Be cautious while using these chemicals. Wear appropriate protective gear such as glasses, face masks, gloves etc, while handling these chemicals. Store them in places where children cannot find them. Some of these may be dangerous because they may be inflammable. Keep such items in locked cabinets and drawers.

Smoking is not only injurious to health but also has the ability to cause other fire accidents if you are not careful. Some people have the habit of smoking in bed. If the cigarette is not put out properly, it can cause fires inside the home. According to reports, one of the leading causes of house fires is smoking and used cigarette stubs.ย

Special occasions and events call for decorations and use of candles and various other lighting sources. Always ensure that the lighting sources are well connected and are accident proof. Never leave the candles unattended.

A smoke alarm is also top priority at every level in your house. Test the alarms regularly and see if they are working properly. Do not forget to change the batteries.
