Tonsillitis: 10 Home remedies

Tonsils are tissues that are found above the tongue on either sides of the throat and are a part of the body’s immune system. They help fight infections against bacteria and viruses. When a bacteria or a virus contaminate the tonsils, it results in swelling (inflammation) of the tonsils and is known as tonsillitis. Tonsillitis can be acute or chronic. While acute tonsillitis is caused by bacteria or a viral infection, chronic tonsillitis is caused by bacteria and lasts for a longer period of time. Though there is no age bar for tonsillitis, they are commonly found in children. Tonsillitis is a contagious disease and spreads easily from one person to another. Some common symptoms of tonsillitis are difficulty in swallowing, sore throat, fever, headache and visible swollen and red patches in tonsils. Treatments vary from taking antibiotics for a mild tonsil and even a surgery in case of chronic tonsils. However, home remedies are also available to cure tonsillitis in an effective manner.

Following are some home remedies to help cure Tonsillitis with the help of things that are available are home:

1. Gargling using salt water

This is the most common, effective and an easy way to cure tonsillitis. In a glass of lukewarm water add a tablespoon of salt and gargle at least 3-4 times a day. This would help in soothing a sore throat that is caused due to tonsils.

2. Gargling using fenugreek seeds

Boil about two tablespoons of fenugreek seeds in water, strain and use the water to gargle. Do not use the same water again and make a fresh one at least each day. This would help in treating tonsils quickly.

3. Babul tree bark

In a bowl of water, add some babul tree bark and boil and simmer it for 15-20 minutes. Strain the mixture and gargle.

4. Increase the intake of fluids

Avoid taking solid food and substitute them by drinking lots of water (preferably warm water), vegetable soups, and tea with honey. When you consume more of liquid food, it would have a soothing effect on your throat and reduces the pain in your throat.

5. Mixed vegetable Juice

Take three parts of carrot juice and one parts of each of cucumber juice and beetroot juice. Drink it to relieve yourself from the tonsil pain and reduce inflammation.

6. Lemon Juice

Take a glass of warm water and squeeze a lemon into it. Add about three tablespoons of honey and a pinch of salt to it and consume this lemon juice at least two times a day to get relief from tonsillitis.

7. Milk with turmeric

You would be surprised to know that milk could be an effective way to reduce inflammation. Add a teaspoon of turmeric powder and pepper powder to milk and consume at night just before you go to bed. It will help soothing a sore throat, throat pain and cold. It is highly effective only when consumed at night.

8. Milk and Viola Odorata flower

For 50ml milk, add 12gms of Viola Odorata flowers and bring it to a boil. Once done, strain the mixture, cool it and drink. Do not throw away the residue as they too can be applied around the throat at night. But fry them in clarified butter for a few minutes before application.

9. Milk and Banafsha flower

To the milk add some banafsha flowers and boil the mixture. Once done, filter them and drink once it is cool. This provides a good relief and cures inflammation.

10. Herbal Remedies

a. Take equal measures of mustard seeds, horseradish seeds, flaxseeds, jute seeds, barley seeds and radish seeds. Make a paste and apply it over the tonsils.

b. Get a bitter tumbi and take out the pulp carefully. Then, fill the kernel with water and keep aside for some time. Drink this water daily to have an effective cure for tonsillitis.

c. Soak the white pea roots in water and grind them nicely to make a smooth paste. Drink this by adding some water.

d. Grind dry figs to a paste and apply them over the throat.

Apart from the above mentioned remedies, ensure that you consume more fruits in your diet and avoid cold items such as ice creams, cool drinks etc as they further increase inflammation and aggravates tonsillitis.
