It is in the pregnancy period when a child is most susceptible, both physically and mentally. It is also difficult to keep a tab on the mental health of the child all the time. So, it is advisable to carry out a pre-pregnancy planning about three months in advance. The mother should have the child only if she wants, as it is she whose establishes the first and closest relationship with the child. She should go for multivitamins about three months in advance. She should also get herself tested and treated for any sexually transmitted diseases, such as Herpes. Apart from that, she should try to maintain a healthy weight throughout the pregnancy, refrain from drug- and alcohol-consumption during the period and have babies with minimum gap of 27 months between two births. If a proper pre-pregnancy planning is done, schizophrenia can be kept at bay.
