Should I do only rotator cuff muscles exercises for shoulder pain and discomfort?

I have been having some minor shoulder pain and discomfort. I asked a doctor and said that I have a sore and stressed cuff muscles but there was no tear. I can lift my arms easily but there is some soreness in the muscles. I think iverhead barball presses at gym caused this. The doctor at gym also said that there is no reason I should drop those excercises. What do you guys think about it? Should I stop lifting for a while and just focus on rotator cuff stuff and maybe leg work?
