Back Pain: Research

Top Research

1. Factors which increase the risk

Generally back pain can affect anyone, but there are some factors which increase the risk like age, fitness levels, diet, heredity, race, presence of other diseases, etc. Cigarette smoking can also be a risk factor. Although smoking may not directly cause back pain but it can block nutrients from reaching the lower back disc, which can cause problems.

2. Surgical and non surgical therapies

For diagnosing back pain, a physician may suggest an X-ray, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computing Tomography (CT) Scan or a blood test. Usually doctors advise NSAIDs (Non Steroid Anti Inflammatory Drugs). Other non surgical therapies used are exercise, aerobics, flexion, stretching exercises and analgesics. Other than this traction, acupuncture, acupressure, corsets & braces, behavior modifications and injections are also used. Some patients may even go through surgeries for herniated disc, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, and vertebral fractures.

4. Prevention

ย To prevent back pain the best thing one can do is exercise. Regular exercise keeps back muscles strong. Exercises that increase balance and strength decrease the risk of falling. Practicing Tai-Chi and Yoga or weight bearing exercises can help in preventing its occurrence.
