Back Pain: Causes

Top Causes

1. Pregnancy

For women, a pain in the back is quite common during pregnancy. If you are carrying a child, then the ligaments in your pelvis are stretched to the maximum, nerves undergo a strain and the lower back bears a lot of strain, setting off a pain.

2. Improper sleeping position

Many of us do not keep the back straight while sleeping. This can easily lead to a backache. Sleeping on your stomach instead of the back can also impart tenderness in your back, making it ache.

3. Inadequate mattress support

Sometimes your bed or mattress can be the cause of backache. If your mattress is very old or you have been using it for more than 10 years, then it can easily set off an ache in your back. Your mattress should be neither too hard nor too soft. It should provide adequate support to your entire body.

4. Inappropriate posture

Maintaining an upright posture is very important whether you are running, walking, sitting or standing. When you slouch, the back muscles suffer strain, causing a pain in your back. Also, tight hamstrings can displace the pelvis out of alignment and make your back pain. A sedentary lifestyle easily triggers off pangs in the back as you have to maintain the same sitting position for long hours. Weak core muscles, those in the abdominal and hips, are unable to hold your body upright causing your back to sting with pain. If your back and neck hurt in the morning, then there is a strong chance that your back pain is due to erroneous posture.

5. Psychological factors

If you are undergoing extreme stress then you can become an easy victim to back ache too. Also, if your relationship with those close to you is not harmonious, then stress from it can result in a backache.

6. Diseases

A disorder in any of the vital organs can also cause your back to pulsate with pain. Generally, a pain in the abdomen, chest or pelvis can trigger off back aches and such pains also commonly occur with abdomen disorders like ovarian complications, kidney diseases, appendicitis and aneurysms. Infection in the kidney, bladder and pelvis will also make your back tinge with pain. Bowel or bladder incontinence can also cause the same. It is a typical symptom experienced with medical conditions like multiple myeloma or osteoporosis. Even cancer patients have to bear the anguish of back pains, especially if the cancerous tissue is in the spine, lungs or breasts.

7. Muscle spasms

Any type of sprain or strain in the muscles is also felt in the back. Inflammation in the body tissues can also make your back go sore. There are many things that can set off muscle spasms, some common ones are stretching your back or carrying a heavy object. Indulging in such activities usually causes a lumber strain which you feel in the lower back.

8. Injury

Sore, gashed or injured muscles can also give rise to a back pain. When muscles, bones or nerves of the spine get hurt, then pain is usually felt in the back. Muscles can get injured if you have been in an accident recently or tripped over and fallen down.

9. Misalignment

Any type of flange or protuberance in the body, as well as misalignment of the spine or pelvis can easily make your back throb with pain. Most people suffering from vertebrae disc problems also have back aches. Back pain is also a common symptom of bone conditions like arthritis, birth defects or other degenerative complications. Body encroachment, which sparks off growth or movement in the vertebrae limiting the space available in the spine, can also makes your back ache.
