Liver Failure Symptoms

Liver Failure: Symptoms

Top Symptoms

1. Cirrhosis

The last stage of fibrosis is cirrhosis. It is defined by nodular and fibrosis regeneration of liver parenchyma. This can effectively damage the lobules. There may be no symptom of cirrhosis at the beginning but ultimately may lead to fatigue, weight loss, chronic jaundice pot systemic encephalopathy and intractable ascites. Hemorrhage, heptic coma and kidney failure may result in a patientโ€™s death. Cirrhosis may develop hepatocellular carcinoma. Some other symptoms of it are hemochromatois, Wilson disease and alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency.ย

2. Damage to fiber

Inflammation of liver parenchyma or fibrous damage starts a process called fibrogeneis. This process helps in limiting the extent of inflammation. Fibrosis damage defines the organization of collagen or matrix proteins in complex molecules and its deposition. These molecules are not soluble. Fibrosis at the first time is beneficial but continued infection may become pathological process. In severe hepatitis, fibrosis tarts around the portal and gradually extends into lobules to the central veins and forms membrane and bridges due to fibrosis.ย

3. Hormonal disorder

Any damage to liver may affect the hormones. Women may suffer secondary amenorrhea and reduction in fertility. Men show impotence, atrophy of testicles and feminization as a result of reduction in synthesis of testosterone. Even there is an increase in the conversion of testosterone to estrogen. The insulin quantity also increases as the ability to catabolize insulin is not done properly.

4. Blood disorders

Many hematological abnormalities contribute in the failure of liver. Some disorders related to coagulation are though common but may cause bleeding. Any disorder related to blood will harm the body and liver in a big way.

5. Dermatological symptoms

Hyperbilirubinemia is associated with itching and scratching of the skin. People who suffer from cirrhosis have spider naevi which is a spider shaped red pigment appearing on the skin of trunk, hands and face but disappears when pressed. This is due to the reduction in metabolism of hormones by liver. People suffering from liver cirrhosis may even have reddened fingertips and palms caused by water and salt retention. Sometimes lipid formations in skin, opaque coloring of skin, injuries caused by continuous itching and scratching also occur.

6. Gastro intestinal symptoms

When the fluid accumulates in the abdominal cavity called ascites then the abdomen stretches and enlarges in size. This may cause discomfort to the patient. This is also a symptom of liver failure.

7. Enlarged liver

It is a common symptom of liver disease. But there are people who have normal liver size even after suffering from liver disease. The enlarged liver gives one a feeling of fullness and discomfort. If the liver continues to enlarge at a rapid rate then there is serious decrease on palpation. Patients may feel drowsy, dizzy, disorientation and slow in movements and speech due to the accumulated toxic substances in blood.

8. Cholestasis

Bile is a secretion of the liver that consists of bilirubin, bile salts, proteins, electrolytes, mucus, phospholipids and cholesterol. Bile flows from liver to duodenum. When its path is blocked by bile ducts as mechanical obstruction then bilirubin gets accumulated in blood. The common symptoms of cholestasis are dark urine, jaundice, itching of skin and feces hypo chromic. The stool may contain high amount of fat. If cholestasis is severe then there is reduced absorption of vitamin K and D affecting the bone tissue and causes bleeding.

9. Jaundice

It causes yellowing of the skin and the white part of the eye also turns yellow. It occurs when the liver is not able to secrete bilirubin that leads to its accumulation in circulating serum. When bilirubin exceeds the 40 mol/l then only jaundice occurs. Jaundice leads to dark urine due to the high percentage of bilirubin passed from blood to urine. Clay colored urine occurs due to the less percentage of bile pigment. Sometimes people suffering from jaundice also complain of skin itching.
