Kidney Stone Symptoms

Kidney Stone: Symptoms

Top Symptoms

1. Frequent urge for urination

As a result of the blocked passage between kidneys and urinary bladder, the urine gets stored in the kidneys, which leads to swollen kidneys. This makes the person feel a frequent urge to pass urine. But, because of the presence of the stones, the sufferer finds it difficult to do so. This causes severe painful waves in almost all corners of the abdomen.

2. Severe pain in the upper and lower abdominal region

At the initial stage, kidney stones can be formed in the upper abdominal region which may cause severe pain. The situation becomes worse when a stone shifts from upper abdomen to the lower abdomen, testicle or groin regions. In this, the pain becomes unbearable for the sufferer. The blockage and loss of capability of passing urine leaves the bearer in a critical situation. Pain becomes even worse when the stones grow in size.

3. Blood in urine

Sometimes urine becomes bloody in appearance. This occurs due to the friction among the stones and the walls of kidneys and ureter. It happens when the stones try their way out from the ureter to the urinary bladder, or this can also be just a friction caused by the long stay of the stones inside the ureter. This friction injures the ureter and kidney walls and oozes blood. This is the serious situation which should not be ignored.

4. Nausea and vomiting

Storage of urine in the kidneys gives a heavy feeling to the bearer. Swollen kidneys lead to stomach bloating. Lack of proper urination forces the body to lighten itself in some or other way (vomiting). These all are the basic symptoms of nausea and vomiting, which are quite common in kidney stone cases.

5. Sudden change in body temperature

The condition becomes critical when a patient gets higher or lower temperature than the normal. This may be termed as the body trying to indicate an emergency situation. The patient feels restlessness and dumbness in the body. If not treated, the situation may worsen.

6. Burning sensation while urination

When urine is stored for a long time and does not get the chance to pass out, it gets mixed with certain acids in the kidneys. This makes the urine more acidic in nature. This causes a burning sensation and irritation at the time of urination. The sufferer feels the passage burning from which urine passes out. This also calls for some serious concerns about the situation.

7. Loss of appetite

Appetite is a usual feeling when the abdominal muscles send a signal of hunger to our brain. But, when the urine has not been passing out of the body, restlessness occurs and abdomen faces uneasiness. This is the main reason of losing appetite while having kidney stones. Loss of appetite leads a sufferer to a weaker body and immune system.

8. Painful waves

When a stone comes down from flank to lower region, pain increases and keeps recurring in equal intervals of time. This wavy pain is highly unbearable. At the initial stage, a bearer may become confused but recurring painful waves are a sure sign of the onset of kidney stones. In a study, these painful waves were found to be equally painful as labor pains or even worse than that.

9. Foul smelling urine

Storage of urine for a longer time results in the mixing of unwanted substances with it. These substances coagulate and infuse the urine with foul and irritating smell. This can be observed at the time of urination.

10. Urinary tract infection

Urinary tract consists of kidneys, ureter and urinary bladder. Women are more prone to urinary tract infections than men. If not treated on time, stones caused by such infection can become larger in size. The larger size inflates the wall of the kidneys and ureter, which results in severe pain. Therefore, a person should get a check up done if any kind of infection is suspected. This will help to keep the stone problem at bay.

11. Changed color of urine

Usually, the color of urine is dark yellow in the morning and becomes almost colorless because of frequent urination throughout the day. But, in the case of kidney stone when there is storage of urine in the kidneys for longer duration, the urine color shifts from normal to abnormal. If a person experiences such symptoms, he should take precautionary measures immediately.
