Heatstroke: Prevention

Top Prevention

1. Try to detect the early heat stroke symptoms and rush for medical help

If you see someone suffering from heat stroke, try to detect the early heat stroke symptoms like high body temperature, hot, red and dry skin, dry and swollen tongue, rapid pulse, nausea and eventual loss of consciousness. While awaiting emergency medical help take the person under a shade and remove the clothes and wet their skin with water. You can also wrap them with wet cloths and fan them continuously. Position them on their side to clear their airway. During a delay in medical attention, seek further instructions from hospital emergency staff.

2. Check on the old, sick and the frail

We get busy keeping ourselves safe during the hot weather. But we tend to forget that the old and sick people need more help than we do. They are already in weak health and are easy prey to heat stroke. They need regular check ups, at least twice a day. They at times fail to express how they feel and so it the duty of the family members to keep an eye on them.

3. Avoid enclosed areas

Stay away from enclosed areas like closed cars or poorly ventilated rooms. This easily suffocates you, leads to fast heartbeat and increases your body temperature. Every year children and pets die in cars in the Arizona area.

4. Take regular baths

Cool shower at intervals is a must. It is another means of preventing your body temperature from rising. Though outdoor activities can be reduced to some extent, we cannot sit still all the day. The body will carry on with certain activities that generate heat within it. Showers, sponge bath or simply bathing helps a lot in keeping your body temperature normal. It also saves you from dehydration.

5. Have light meals

Whatever you eat during the day, it should be light. Light meals are easily digestible compared to heavy meals which take a long time to digest, giving you a feel of discomfort. It may even result in vomiting. So it is safe to stay on light foods. Boiled and less spicy foods are easy to cook too. That leaves you with more time for other work to be done.

6. Dress appropriately

Your dress is a crucial factor that helps you fight the heat. Air circulation through your body is very essential as it helps in keeping you cool. For that always wear light colored cotton clothing. Light color reflects back the heat and making you feel comfortable throughout the day. Cotton clothes absorb your sweat, giving you an idea of how much fluid you have lost.

7. Keep to the shades and stay cool

It is better to stay indoors as much as possible. If you feel like going for some entertainment out of the house, the safe and fun-filled places are movie theaters or shopping malls. You can also spend time at a public library while children can spend time with friends playing video games. These are all indoor activities that keep you in the shade, safe from the heat. Go for an air-conditioner for the summer season. Plan some in-house entertainment where every family member can participate. This brings the family together and the heat out of everything.

8. Increase your fluid intake

As the weather forecasts show the gradual increase in the temperatures, it is time for you to start increasing your daily fluid intake. The more you take in fluids the more will your body remain cool and therefore it can gradually adapt itself to the increasing heat of the summer. A sudden unavoidable circumstance like going out in the extreme heat can be handled, if this preventive measure followed religiously. For this make sure that you have at least 5 to 6 liters of water daily. Remember to carry a water bottle with you whenever you go out.

9. Adapting oneself to the heat

It is not possible to cut off our outdoor life for fear of heat stroke. So the first preventive measure will be to adapt oneself to the heat of the day. Try to get your work done during the early morning or evening hours. It is cooler during these hours and so you can get your exercises and other outdoor engagements done during these cooler hours of the day. A little change in lifestyle is required for this. An early sleep will help you rise early and utilize the early morning hours, without losing on your necessary hours of sleep. If the whole family is actively involved in this preventive measure it will not only help all the members but neither will anybodyโ€™s scheduled work remain pending.
