Gallstones: Research

Top Research

1. Caffeine can act as a deterrent to developing gallstones

According to recent studies, an average of four cups of hot coffee grants you near immunity against gallstones. However, women are two times more at risk than men when it comes to developing the painful stones. Furthermore, overweight people or those who have gone from being obese to slim in a very short period of time run higher risks. The study further suggested that people who do not drink any coffee are 75 percent more likely to develop gallstones than avid caffeine drinkers. Researchers suggested that caffeine is probably responsible for the amazing gallstone effects. Caffeine prevents the formation of stones by triggering gallbladder contractions.

2. Gene variants are responsible for development of gallstones

A team of scientists from the University of Bonn has discovered a new gene variant that indicates the possibility of gallstones. The study shows that one-tenth of the European population carries the variant. This puts them at risk of developing gallstones at least once in their lifetime. Gallstones are quiet common. They affect close to twenty percent of the total population in Germany every year. Genetic component plays a crucial role in augmenting the possibilities of gallstones, especially among twin siblings. According to the research, in about 70 percent of gallstone cases, dietary irregularity is the major risk factor. Genetic factors usually account for the rest.

3. Surgery can be performed even before gallstone inflammation subsides

Surgeons will no longer be required to wait for the subsiding of pancreatic inflammations before operating on patients with gallstone pancreatitis, says a research conducted by the Los Angeles Bio Medical Research Institute. Patients suffering from gallstone pancreatitis spend days waiting for the inflammations to come down. They are operated on only after the symptoms have disappeared for good. This results in expensive hospital stays. Taking into account the problems faced by patients during gallstone operations, researchers decided to find ways of cutting down on the time and costs associated with such surgical procedures. The study showed that patients suffering from mild pancreatitis were able to leave the hospital within days of undergoing surgery.

4. Exercise can reduce the risk of developing gallstones

According to British researchers, exercise reduces your chances of developing gallstones. The study was carried out on a group comprising 25,000 men and women. The results showed that active people in the group had 70 percent less chances of developing gallstone problems. Researchers further added that exercise helps improve movements in certain parts of the body, thereby contributing to lowered risks. The participants were divided into groups depending on the level of exercise performed by each. Surprising as it may sound, even those participants who exercised quite infrequently showed lower risks of developing the symptoms. Hence, all that can be said is, exercise regularly to stay away from gallstones.

5. A new endoscope to locate and dislodge gallstones

A group of scientists from China have developed an endoscope that can locate and remove gallstones more effectively than the existing devices. However, currently the researchers have submitted a paper describing the device in great detail to AIP. This new endoscope is fitted with a small ultrasonic probe that scans the organ for gallstones before locating and dislodging them. Additionally, the device features an โ€œabsorbing boxโ€, shaped curiously like a horn, which doctors can use to get rid of sludge-like fine gallstones. The researchers have compared the functionality of the device to that of a vacuum cleaner which works by sucking out dust particles lying on the carpet. Moreover, an army of standardized interfaces will help the device connect to different camera systems globally. A sizable amount of the population suffers from small grain-like gall stones which are difficult for the current breed of endoscopy devices to locate and retrieve. It was the need for an effective detector of tiny gallstones that prompted researchers to come out with this latest device.
