1. Herbal supplement of little use to relieve symptoms

In a research report, Professor Gerald Andriole of Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis has mentioned that the fruit of the saw palmetto tree is of little help when it comes to relieve symptoms of an enlarged prostate. With doctors in Europe and the US often recommending saw palmetto over more traditional drug treatments, this research results may come as a rude shock for both patients and caregivers dealing with enlarged prostate. The new results have ruled out the effectiveness of saw palmetto even when taken in high doses in cases of enlarged prostate. In a clinical trial involving over 300 men in the age group of above 45 suffering form moderate symptoms of an enlarged prostate, were given a daily dose of saw palmetto extract. Even after 17 months of observation, the researchers found that saw palmetto had no greater effect than that of a placebo. The study was conducted under an Investigational New Drug Application from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

2. For enlarged prostate a combination therapy works better

According to a new study from UT Southwestern Medical Center, the combined effort of the two commonly prescribed drugs for enlarged prostate yielded better results than using any one of them in singular. A clinical study of a group of about 5000 men with enlarged prostate over four years has yielded this result. The group was divided into three parts. The first group received the drug dutasteride, patients of the second group were administered to tamsulosin; and the third received a combination of both the medicines. Team leader Dr. Claus Roehrborn, chairperson of urology at UT Southwestern, concluded from the results after careful observation that when dutasteride and tamsulosin worked together, the result was a 25 percent reduction in prostate volume and a 50 percent reduction of prostate-specific antigen. Compared to administering tamsulosin or dutasteride alone, this result shows that the combination of both were most effective in reducing symptoms.

3. Minimal invasion breakthrough for enlarged prostate symptoms

In a new interventional radiology treatment, prostatic artery embolization has been pronounced as the future for treatment for BPH treatment. It will neatly replace the transurethral resection of the prostate or TURP without the associated risks of urinary incontinence, sexual dysfunction, blood loss, and retrograde ejaculation. At the Annual Scientific Meeting in Chicago, the research study head, Joรฃo Martins Pisco, explained that the prostatic artery embolization is a safer alternative to block blood supply to treat enlarged prostate and can be performed under local anesthesia. He explained the detailed clinical results and indicated that prostatic artery embolization patients experienced symptom improvement comparable to TURP. He emphasized that innovative technologies, such as prostatic artery embolization, would help the quality of life of the BPH patients, and help to eradicate the discomfort and morbidity while managing the complications of the disease.

4. Botox treatment to benefit men with enlarged prostate

According to a combined study by researchers at the Chang Gung University Medical College, Taiwan, and the University Of Pittsburgh School Of Medicine, it has been noted that injecting Botox or botulinum toxin A into the prostate gland of men with enlarged prostate, alleviated symptoms and improved quality by almost a year. The study, led by Michael Chancellor found by closely examining a group of 37 men enlarged prostate that Botox could bring about relatively a rather simpler and safer treatment for enlarged prostate with long-term benefits. The men who received Botox injections directly into their prostate glands experienced about a 30 percent improvement in urinary tract symptoms without any significant side effects. Furthermore, the Botox reduces the size of the prostate gland through a cellular process where the prostate cell dies in a calculated manner helping to clear urine flow better.

5. Laser therapy a safer and long-lasting option for enlarged prostate

In a new research paper presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Urology Association, Washington, 2011, holmium laser therapy was presented as a safer and long lasting treatment option for enlargement of the benign prostatic hyperplasia or enlarged prostate in men. The study, conducted by researchers from the McGill University Health Centre suggested that compared to TURP patients treated with holmium laser therapy experienced lesser pain and shorter hospital stays with no sexual side effects. The therapy treated all sizes of prostatic enlargement with a promise of long-term durability.
