Dengue Fever Symptoms

Dengue Fever: Symptoms

Top Symptoms

1. Nausea and vomiting

Nausea is a sensation of discomfort and unease in the stomach, which may or may not lead to vomiting (emesis). The infection may cause indigestion resulting in nausea and vomiting. Nausea is not a characteristic symptom of dengue infection; it is usually an accompaniment of fever, headache and other symptoms.

2. Mild or severe bleeding

The infection in many cases also leads to mild bleeding from mucus membranes of the nose and mouth. People with mild symptoms experience bleeding from gums and nose. Severe cases of dengue (dengue hemorrhagic fever) may lead to organ dysfunction and severe bleeding, especially from the gastrointestinal (GI) tract region. Such severe symptoms occur in less than 5 percent cases of dengue infection. People previously infected by the same virus are at an increased risk of developing dengue hemorrhagic fever.

3. Skin rash

Patients with dengue infection usually experience symptoms of flushed skin, which may appear as a measles-like rash. It can also be accompanied by some petechiae (red spots formed due to broken capillaries) in the later stage (4-7 days) of illness. The skin rashes are usually found in the back region, but can appear anywhere on the body. It is a characteristic symptom of dengue infection, and occurs in 50 to 80 percent cases with mild symptoms.

4. Muscle, bone and joint pain

Dengue is also known as ‘breakbone fever’ because of its symptoms, which lead to pain in bones, muscles and joints. Muscle and joint aches in dengue are usually experienced in many areas of the body, which may also involve bones, ligaments, tendons, fascia and organs. The patient usually feels weak and this is accompanied by joint pain, especially in knees, elbows and lower back. Pain in the lower back can sometimes be severe with fever.

5. Hypotension

Hypotention refers to an abnormally low blood pressure. In a severe case of dengue, the patient may experience a sudden drop in the blood pressure, which may be accompanied by bleeding from nose and gums (dengue shock syndrome). This occurs when the body hits a state of shock, which is a medical emergency. Mild symptoms of dengue may also lead to hypotension along with an abnormally slow heart rate.

6. Headache

Headache is a term used to describe pain in the head or upper neck. It is the most common location of pain in the whole body. Dengue leads to a typical headache which is accompanied by pain behind the eye region. It usually occurs with fever and the intensity of pain usually increases with high temperature.

7. Bradycardia

Bradycardia, derived from the Greek bradys (slow) + cardia (heart), refers to an abnormally slow heart rate, usually less than 60 beats per minute. The body temperature rises up in the first few hours of outbreak of dengue symptoms, which also leads to a low heart rate in patients.

8. Chills

Chills, also called rigor, is a feeling of coldness accompanied by shivering. It occurs with exposure to cold environment or as an accompaniment of fever. Chills occur as an immune response of the body to increase the set point for body temperature. It can be usually experienced by the patient with the sudden onset of dengue fever.

9. High fever

A characteristic symptom of dengue is a sudden onset of high fever which may be accompanied by other symptoms. A sudden rise in body temperature is a reaction of the immune system against the infection. The fever usually ranges between 38.3ยฐC to 40ยฐC, which in some cases may even rise up to 41.1ยฐC. Fever usually lasts 2 to 7 days after the outbreak.
