Dengue Fever: Prevention

Top Prevention

1. Change water in the vases regularly

If you are having vases and coolers in your house, then you cannot remove water from them permanently. In such cases, you must change the water in them regularly, thus eliminating the chances of mosquito breeding.

2. Eliminate standing water resources

It is a well known fact that mosquitoes breed in stagnant water, therefore, any such item like tires and buckets which can hold water must be removed. You must also cover the wells and drains so that mosquitoes cannot breed inside them. Add some bleaching powder to kill mosquito eggs if water cannot be drained. The roof gutters must be checked regularly as they often get choked because of leaves and twigs, thus, allowing water to accumulate. This stagnant water serves as an optimal breeding ground for mosquitoes.

3. Take plenty of fluids

Intake of plenty amount of fluids can help you out in the prevention of dengue fever. You must make sure that there is sufficient amount of water inside your body. Fruit juices are very effective when it comes to combating dengue fever. You must drink at least 6 to 8 liters of water each day. Other than this, you must ensure that you are having a nutritious meal.

4. Remain indoors

Try to remain inside the house as much as possible in rooms with effective screening or air conditioning. However, this is not a very practical way of prevention from dengue fever as you can’t stay indoors all the time, but still the risk is lowered if restrict the amount of time which you spend outdoors. Use indoor insect repellents in order to further reduce the risk of mosquito bite.

5. Keep the infected person away from mosquitoes

You must understand the fact that the mosquitoes which transmit this disease are just the carriers of the virus, their bite alone cannot be held responsible for the transmission of disease. The disease gets transmitted only when this mosquito bites an infected person from where it carries the virus and then bites another person to whom the virus gets transmitted. Therefore, it becomes very important that the infected person is kept away from the mosquitoes in order to avoid the transmission of this disease to other people.

6. Control the mosquito population

Another effective measure to prevent dengue fever is to control the population of the virus transmitting agents, i.e., the mosquitoes whose bite transmits the virus. This can be achieved with the help of insecticides. Spray the insecticides around the area where you spend most time outdoors. Use the biological control agents to eliminate the habitat of the mosquitoes.

7. Sleep inside mosquito nets

Sleeping in a mosquito net is also one of the effective measure for the prevention of dengue. Although the mosquitoes responsible for the transmission of this virus are most active during the day, still it is suggested to sleep inside the mosquito net during the night. The mosquito net limits the risk of mosquito bite or bite of any other disease carrying insect during the night when you are asleep. Make sure that the net has been hung properly overhead while you are sleeping. The net must cover the entire bed and there must be no gaps in coverage.

8. Use insect repellents

The risk of an insect bite is reduced to a considerable extent with the use of insect repellents. Apply the repellent to all exposed skin like palm, face and back of the neck, which is one of the popular site for mosquito bites. There must be 20-30 percent of DEET in your insect repellent, an amount of DEET more than this can cause side effects whereas lesser amount won’t prove to be much effective. Apply the repellent when the mosquitoes are most active i.e., during the early morning and evening hours. In order to avoid inhalation, aerosol must be sprayed outside and in well ventilated areas. Spray the repellents on clothing as mosquitoes can bite even through thin clothing.

9. Proper clothing

If you are in an infected tropical area during the day and evening hours, then make sure that you are wearing clothing with long sleeves and pants. This preventive measure is especially important if you are traveling to muggy areas like lakes, marshes, rivers and swamps. The mosquitoes whose bite spread the virus feeds during the day. The amount of skin which is exposed to mosquitoes is reduced if you are wearing clothing which provides proper coverage, thus, the chances of mosquito bite and subsequent transmission of the virus are lowered.
