Cysts Symptoms

Cysts: Symptoms

Top Symptoms

1. Sudden sharp pains

When the cysts are ruptured, they may cause sudden, sharp pains in the particular area. If the cysts are ruptured in the internal organs like ovaries, they may cause sharp pelvic pain or abdominal pain in some cases. Such sudden, sharp pain can be an indication that you need urgent medical advice. If the cysts are present on the skin, they may either go away themselves, or they may be ruptured suddenly, causing pain. You may also notice thick, sticky, clear liquid coming out of the ruptured cysts.

2. Pain in the knee

People who may have Baker’s cyst may have constant knee pain or tightness behind the knee. The pain is especially noticeable when the knee is extended or flexed. If there is a cyst on one knee, then there may be a visible bulge behind that knee that is not present on the uninvolved knee. Such a cyst may be soft and tender.

3. Indigestion

Cysts in some of the body organs may lead to indigestion or constipation. Many people with cysts in internal organs may feel full even though they have eaten little. They may even feel bloated or have difficulty in emptying their bowels.

4. Difficulties during intercourse

Females with cysts in the genital region might experience pelvic pain during intercourse. Males with cysts in genital region may also feel pain during sexual intercourse. These cysts may cause a frequent urge to urinate. Cysts are also a common cause of irregular menstruation in females.

5. Pelvic pain

Women who may have ovarian cysts may suffer from pelvic pain. Such pain can be dull sensation which may occur due to the presence of large cysts or a sharp pain caused to ruptured cysts. Females with ovarian cysts may also feel bloated and full.

6. Sac like growth present since birth

A particular kind of cysts, called the Dermoid cyst, is present at the birth. These types of cysts grow slowly in a sac like structure. They may have hair, fluid or skin glands. These cysts are present from birth and are generally present on the face. Such cysts can be removed and don’t cause pain unless ruptured.

7. Swelling on joints

In case of ganglion cysts, a person may develop swelling on the top of a joint. The swelling may be like a covering of a tendon tissue and may contain thick, clear liquid below the swelling. These cysts may feel firm or spongy. Such cysts mostly develop on the back of the hand, at the wrist joint or on the palm side of the wrist. These cysts appear over time, may get smaller in size, go away and then come back.

8. Pain and tenderness

If there is a lump on the infected area or skin, it might be smooth and round. There may be distinct edges around the lump. You may even experience slight pain or tenderness around the area, especially when you touch it with a finger. If the lump is around the breast area, then it may increase its size just before your period. After the period, this lump may decrease in its size. But these lumps don’t necessarily indicate breast cancer. Still, you should see a doctor if you detect presence of new lumps or an unprecedented growth or change in previous lumps.

9. Lump

Cysts on the outer skin surface may appear like an abnormal lump. For instance, cysts on the breasts or tissues beneath the skin may look like a lump. Such an area can be generally examined by fingers. But not all the cysts produce similar symptoms. Some cysts, like those in brain, kidney or liver may not be detected on your skin. Therefore, size and location clearly affect the symptoms of the cysts.
