Top Causes

1. Wheat and other grains

Primarily, wheat is considered to be the chief agent that causes the celiac disease. The presence of gliadin is the main reason for the onset of the celiac disease and it is found in plenty in wheat. There are other food grains like barley which are responsible for carrying the celiac causing protein. Once the onset of the celiac disease is confirmed, the only treatment that is recommended is a lifelong diet of gluten free food.

2. Childhood exposure

The onset of the celiac disease is more prominent in children who have the exposure to whole grain food before the period of six months after their birth. The children who are kept on the motherโ€™s milk diet for a duration of more than 6 months are more immune to the celiac disease than those children who are made to consume grains.

3. Villous atrophy

The mediation of T cells result in the onset of an inflammatory process that leads to the disruption of small bowel lining and causes malabsorption by impairing the body from the ability to absorb the nutrients, vitamins and fats from the digested food. This, however, can be easily treated if detected in time and the bowel movements can be restored.

4. Tissue transglutaminase

It has been determined after careful study that the presence of tissue transglutaminase precedes the onset of celiac disease. The autoantibody deposits not only result in celiac disease but also a number of other phenomenon and diseases. Recent studies have confirmed that gliadin is generally the most responsible agent for the onset of the celiac disease. Various viral proteins also take part in the flattening and stimulating of the anti VP7 that reduces the healing process of the patients.

5. Prolamins

The prolamins are the most celiac causing proteins in the food. These proteins are very rich in proline and glutamine. These are readily dissolved in alcohol and are found to be resistant to peptidases and proteases of the gut. The prolamins stimulate the cell membranes of the intestine and allow the lrger molecules to be trapped in between cells and results in the leakage of peptides of gliadin. This results in the release of various enzymes and inflammation of the intestines, eventually leading to the celiac disease.

6. Genetic

Over 95% of total patients who suffer from celiac disease have inherited it from their parents via the HLA-DQ gene. This gene is located in the sixth chromosome and has been labeled as CELIAC1. If the gene is inherited from one parent then the onset of celiac may or may not occur but in case of both parents suffering from celiac, the onset of the disease is inevitable.

7. IgA deficiency

IgA deficiency in patients contributes towards the fast growth of celiac disease. The absence of IgA in the body can result in the increased risk of catching the celiac disease. IgA or the immunoglobulin A is primarily responsible to sustain the defense mechanism of the body and its deficiency allows celiac to thrive at a very fast rate since there are almost no B lymphocytes in the peripheral blood to fight the disease.

8. Malabsorption

Difficulty in absorption of nutrients by the intestine results in the loss of immunity of the body and allows the body to become susceptible to a number of diseases. Bacterial overgrowth in the region of small intestine also contributes towards the onset of celiac disease in the presence of wheat proteins.

9. Gastrointestinal

Celiac is caused due to the non absorption of nutrients by the body when the absorption process is interrupted by prolamin which is found in grains (especially wheat). The result is chronic diarrhea, abdominal pain and unregulated bowel movement. Once the patient acquires irritable bowel syndrome or IBS, the onset of the celiac disease is almost inevitable. Untreated gastrointestinal disorders may result in severe complications and acute cases of the celiac disease can even give rise to the risks like intestinal cancer or adenocarcinoma.
